My Mom just dropped her iPhone 4 and the screen cracked in the middle. I know a cracked screen isn't included in the warranty, but have any of you had luck taking it into the Apple store and them replacing it for you?

It's mixed results, and depends on luck and the Genius' mood, really.

Expect to pay $199 to have it fixed. And if they decide to fix it for free, then be pleasantly surprised.

Make an appointment and bring it in. There have been many cases where people have gotten it replaced for free. Never know until you try.

Ok so does that mean there is not a "policy" saying that they are not allowed to replace a cracked screen? It just depends on what the genius says?
