13 Pro, no AppleCare or separate phone insurance. Still under warranty until May 2023. The back glass is cracked (no other damage at all).

What is the most cost effective way to get this repaired without invalidating Apple's warranty?

Without AppleCare, Apple's website quotes £526.44 just to replace the back glass  which is insane. With AppleCare it would be just £25.

Most third party, unofficial repairers are quoting around £70-£90, but I believe this would invalidate Apple's warranty?

I don't feel capable enough to attempt to repair it myself, especially if it involves opening the phone/taking it apart - which again I believe invalidates the warranty.

Is there a way to do this which preserves the warranty, but is far more cost effective (<£100)?

Thanks

iPhone 12 and 13 series have replaceable back glass, but the website doesn’t list replacement costs. Set an appointment at an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider & see what they quote - no obligation to complete the repair if you don’t like the price.

Here in the UK Apple have their prices for 'Other damage' repairs without AppleCare and it's £526.44

I'd bite the bullet and have Apple repair it.
They have the skills (hopefully:rolleyes:), tools, and materials to get it done correctly, and that would probably allow your warranty to proceed forward.
Or maybe find an "unauthorized repair" person with experience and a GREAT REPUTATION.
I don't know that an unauthorized repair would necessarily cost you the balance of the warranty, but if you did have a problem in the future, the repair responsibility would certainly be in question both by Apple and the repairer.
Read the warranty policy carefully, warranty policies are very specific.
I have little confidence in repair people.
Were it mine, I'd buy the OEM parts, a proper tool kit, seal kits, etc and do it myself as I'm confident that I could at least as good a job of it.

How did it break?

I wouldn’t be replacing the glass back at such a ridiculous price. You could purchase a brand new 12 Mini with the cost of repair.

If the damage is purely cosmetic, I would just get a case to cover it and continue using the phone until the warranty runs out, then I would get a third party repair at a small fraction of the price.

You paid your money, now you take the ride. Trade the warranty for a cheap questionable repair, or have it done by Apple and pay again to hold onto that precious warranty. Capitalism 101

In many countries they still don't offer the backplate replacement for iPhone 12 or 13 series. I asked in my authorized service provider when I took a broken HomePod Mini to be replaced under warranty a month ago. They mentioned that they still didn't have the tool so they were still replacing the whole phone.

If you are adamant that you still want a warranty with Apple then you have to have it repaired by Apple. Personally if I were in your shoes and I would just upgrade to the 14 pro. It’s only two months away. It probably won’t cost you much more than £500 anyway and then you can take out insurance/Apple care +. Once repair costs get that much I usually replace the item.

Commiserations @NewBench That is a miserable bit of bad luck. As others have suggested, I would just go for a skin on the back, a case and see what comes out in September.

On a personal note, this has convinced me to sign up my 13 Mini for AppleCare + before my 60 days run out.

£25 vs £500 😬

Devices are way too expensive to not have insurance now a days. They say the glass is almost crack proof bull! Every device at what they charge should come with insurance period!

Cheapest option.

Stick a Dbrand skin on it, then add on a nice case and you’re all good.

As long as you don’t dunk it in water.
Exactly what I did.

Purchased an XR early last year with cracked rear glass.

Added a skin (can't remember what brand it was, but it wasn't D-brand) as a stop-gap measure to tie me over before replacing the rear glass.

Still using the same skin (without a case over the top of the skin) today. I won't bother repairing the rear glass now.

The skin shows minimal signs of wear (ie no signs of peeling off, no deep scuffs, gouges etc). The skin has texture which (for me) makes the phone easier to grip and handle. Wireless charging works fine.

The cost of the skin is far far cheaper compared to a third party glass repair (let alone Apple's repair cost!).
For all intents and purposes, with the skin applied you wouldn't know my phone has cracked rear glass...

Yes, I’m aware - it also states that “Back-glass-only repairs are available for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models” but no specific pricing is listed if you don’t have AppleCare+. I’d think it would be less, if they’re not replacing the whole phone - only way is to take it in and ask.

For a back glass repair, with or without apple care:
The rear system is changed, which includes all components of a phone apart from the screen and rear camera which are taken from the old cracked phone.
This is $29 or $550 exact can be seen on their website.
So if you want warranty, you’ll have to pay a lot.
Third party guys will break and remove rear glass and paste a new rear glass on it which will go over lenses instead of under them, no warranty obviously.

Earlier a rear glass break was $99 but same price out of warranty and gave you a new return phone, much better deal. At least AC+ cost reduced but I still had to pay $60 instead of $29.

Nope, mentioned quite clearly online. It’s the “other damage” cost.

It's my dad's phone not mine, apparently it dropped onto the ground in a car park when he got out of his car.

Decided he's going to just put a case on it as suggested (probably should have done so in the first place!)

If it functions otherwise, probably the best solution.
I've wondered what the logic in making the back of the phone out of a brittle material is.
Probably glamour.

Get the cheapest repair you can and sell it in a few months. Between the sale of your 13 Pro and the money you saved by not going with Apple, you probably covered most of the cost of a new iPhone 14 Pro.

Keep in mind that your water resistance will go away completely with a cracked iPhone, so if you plan on just sticking with it cracked--keep it in a case or have a skin on it and don't go near water lol
