Cracked screen + Apple Upgrade Program question

I haven't used any "incidences" yet through my apple care using the IUP Apple Upgrade Program - and my screen is cracked. My question is, do I bring it in now to the apple help desk to get the screen replaced or can I just send in my cracked phone and they charge me the same price ($29)?

Less risk to just have it fixed and then send it in, but should result in the same fee.
