This is what it's come to, I guess. "Mr. CEO man, I broke my thing!"
more like "Mr. CEO man, you promised a product would perform a certain way and it didn't, so how's about you replace my screen for free with some of the billions you made (and have stashed away for a rainy day in the forever distant future) by marketing something that didn't meet expectations?" Or maybe I should actually go so far as to apologize to Mr. Cook for breaking one of his products.

Everything in title. Have an appt in an hour with Apple. I know that anything can happen depending upon angle, etc. But they advertise this amazing ceramic screen and the thing completely shattered after I dropped it while sitting in my office chair, on a carpeted floor, just a one foot fall at most, with a screen protector on. Was sad I had to change my screen protector at first then noticed the entire screen underneath was destroyed. And now I am possibly looking at $230 to replace? This seems crazy. Never broke an iphone screen before. Do they ever comp you the fee? Will see what they say, but this seems unusual.
Sorry, ajm222. I think you're just really unlucky. Might have been a tiny imperfection in the screen along with just the right angle and force from the drop. My friend drops her iPhone X regularly (even dropped it onto the road) with no case and screen protector and it's still fine. ??‍♂️

You could drop that phone 100x and not break the screen. I can’t count how many times my Mini has flown out of my hand onto concrete, a solid surface or my hardwood floor. Not a mark on the thing either so I can say it’s well built.

What you experienced was a freak occurrence. It’s like in UFC where some fighters eat haymakers and kicks to the face and continue to fight on whereas others get starched from a single random body shot.

I don't remember seeing anything in the spec sheet about dropping onto chair legs, but I guess I can review that part of the datasheet again.

I'm sure Apple considers you more special than all their other customers though, so I'd expect Tim's people will talk to your people and set up a time so he can express his contrition. Or maybe slot an apology into the next keynote.

I'm curious if you're haranguing the CEO of the company that made your case and screen protector with as much gusto? Or are they less at fault because they have less billions to nick?

Thanks, and I agree and had considered that myself. I asked about that and they said of course I could have any repair done by mailing the phone in, in which case they would also perhaps do a more thorough job of examining the device and the glass. But I seriously doubt they'd actually do more than the store did in quickly glancing at it, and I'd be without a device for weeks.

I ended up getting it repaired even though they said they couldn't do anything about the price. I basically got the phone free through Verizon and will definitely want to trade it in at some point. The screen worked and I could have continued using it broken, but it would be worthless for trade in purposes without a repair. I'll send a note to the Tim cook email and maybe even file a BBB complaint for a refund. Can't hurt. And not to be a jerk necessarily, because maybe they'd actually be interested in knowing something like this happened when it probably shouldn't have. They can always look up where the phone was manufactured and see if there have been any other issues with devices made there over a particular time period. Unlikely, but it's a possibility.

Ultimately it may have just been one of those super unlucky instances where a hard material made contact in precisely the way necessary to shatter it. But thinking about what happened again even now it seems odd given all the other ways I've dropped and damaged my devices in the past, never to have a screen shatter, even back to the iphone 4. After hitting a rounded piece of plastic. The chair leg does have a sort of corner that is rounded but could have bluntly made contact with the screen in one very isolated spot in a one in a million kind of way.
Under what pretense would you file a complaint for a refund? You have no proof the phone as manufactured is defective and thus caused your screen to shatter. If you want to blame someone, look in the mirror. Apple doesn't owe you anything but to honor the repair work done at the stated price.

Apple has never stated that the screen would never shatter under any condition.

You are looking to take advantage of Apple. I hope they ignore you.

Apple have never claimed the screens were unbreakable.

They're tougher than they have been but not unbreakable.

A 10 lb bag of sugar dropped on the phone might not damage anything, a one pound sharp stone however...

It sounds to me that when it fell you got unlucky due to the angle of impact.

Life happens. Get over it.

You want Apple to pay for the screen on the free phone you broke so you can trade it in for a profit.
Apple was paid for the phone, and I certainly don't stand to make any profit off a trade-in. I've also been entirely honest about the situation with Apple, and they haven't given me anything. so no, I am clearly not taking advantage of Apple.

But you apparently want to by seemingly wanting them to reimburse your for the screen that you broke.

I went through this whole thread. I used to work as a technician for them. Freak occurrences do happen. The glass is quite strong but it’s still not as strong as metal as you claimed. I also don’t think Apple has ever made that claim. I’ve had dumb **** break my screens before too. It definitely sucks. There’s a lot to blame Apple for and a ton to criticize them over, but you just got the raw end of physics in this case. My 13 Pro Max has been through a ton of drops without issue, but I know any of these drops could potentially crack it. Unless the technician who helped you was a complete sociopath, they did everything in their power to help. I don’t think it’s worth your time or energy to pursue the BBB or anything like that. In my 7 years of working for Apple we never once responded or received any requests from the BBB lol.

Not sure how you can possibly come to that conclusion. So many different variables factor into whether or not the screen is damaged or survives. The OP's phone is a 12 mini which could be 2 years old if purchased/received when released. If the screen was defective, why did it take that long to break? I'd say the screen cracked because all the variables lined up and that all. Defects in screens show up as a singular crack with no spidering or obvious impact mark. If the screen has multiple cracks it's not considered defective.
Good points -

You dropped it, you broke it, you didn’t insure it, you pay to fix it. It happens. It’s painful but you get over it.

I fell asleep with a brand new maxed out 2015 15” MacBook Pro on my lap. It slid down my legs, fell 4” and hit the floor. The screen went pop. I understand your pain. But I broke it, not the vendor. I did blame the vendor mentally for the first 12 hours of grief which was wrong.

If this happens now I have learned to walk away from it for at least 24 hours and then deal with it. But make sure it’s insured because it hurts a lot less then.

Very unlucky. I had an iPhone 6s+ and I dropped it - this is absolutely the truth - about two feet, front screen down, onto GRASS. And... the front screen shattered, completely spiderwebbed across, rendering the phone completely unusable. Fortunately I was in LA near an Apple Store so I went in and got it replaced about an hour later, but I couldn't believe it. Must have been an invisible flaw somewhere.

Yeah, it’s very bizarre. Still trying to wrap my head around it. I’ve dropped a million apple devices and NEVER cracked a front screen.
No two falls are the same. If you think about the impact of what causes damage to a smart phone, it’s based on the 1.) Angle the fall lands on and 2.) The surface type.

No matter what marketing tactics sells in terms of durability, there’s nothing these manufacturers can do to make promises against all impacts in every scenario. I know it’s unfortunate that happened to your phone, but it’s just a phone at the end of the day. I wouldn’t allow this situation to overwhelm you as it’s apparently happening.

I’ve dropped a million apple devices

Maybe you shouldn't be holding Apple devices ?

Sorry to hear, but you are trying to get everyone on your side for something YOU did and unfurtunatly it broke.
and writing large blocks of texts explaing how terrible Apple is, will not realy solve your problem.

Interestingly enough, the BBB shows they’ve actually responded to thousands. Some 2,500 in the last 12 months. You can read the actual exchanges and resolutions on the site (refunds, store credit, etc etc). It’s interesting. Like most huge companies they likely have a whole department or several dedicated just to handling customer complaints received through the several most common channels.

Re: insurance, it still doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense given the cost, unless the whole phone needs to be replaced. $150 to insure it at the cheapest level, then $30 to repair the screen. Which is only $50 less than the repair without insurance. And as we’ve seen testified here, this rarely happens. Seems to make more financial sense in the long run to take one’s chances. At least given this particular scenario.

What a coincidence. I’ve had iPhones since 2008 and have never dropped one. I always use a case. As luck would have it, on Monday, I dropped my iPhone 13 Pro Max from about 2 feet high (while trying to plug it in). It landed on our wood floor face down. When I picked it up I saw the screen was shattered…only held in place by the screen saver.

I have AppleCare and ordered an express replacement that morning for $99. The iPhone arrived Wednesday. After setting up my new iPhone, i packaged up my old iPhone in the box provided by Apple and shipped it back to them. Very painless process. I had considered going to the Genius Bar at more local Apple Store, but decided on the express replacement option.

So it looks like You dropped your phone and damaged the screen. It does not look like the screen self destructed. I can see anyone getting angry for breaking something expensive. It might take a bit longer for some to realize what happen. But if you repeat to yourself a couple of time of what happened, "I dropped it while sitting in my office chair" you should easily come to the correct conclusion. Things like his happens, just own up to it. ;)

Also, am I the only one here that is trying to picture someone sitting on office chair that is only 1 foot in height? If its anyone that is getting reported BBB, it would your work place for making you sit on a office chair that is 1 foot in height. you are practically working off the floor. Maybe what really happen was that the wheel of your chair rolled over your phone after the drop, when you were getting off the chair to get it. either way, it was still I dropped it while sitting in my office chair.

as for insurance, you can take a look at your CreditCards. some Creditcards offer some extra phone protection if you use their card to pay for your monthly phone bill. For American Express , the deductible is like $50.

I think what it comes down to, is that the some would rather place fault on the product rather than themself due to there own error. That’s one of the stages of not wanting to take ownership for something that they did, because they want to find a financial means for the phone to be covered by the company (Apple), because either 1.) They don’t have the money for the repair and/or, 2.) They don’t want to spend the money on the repair, because they spent ‘too much already’ on the phone.

That’s typically how these threads are in most cases.

the distance between the cushion of the chair where the phone was resting when it slide off and the part on the leg of the chair that it hit is about 10-12 inches. pretty standard office chair like this one:

Wow that is really unfortunate, if it was 9 inches it would have been fine.
that shows how much of a difirence an inch can make.

I always get AppleCare, have rarely had an iPhone that didn’t need to be swapped at least once (due to a defect, not something I did). I see it as basically a “hidden” extra cost for the device, if you want to have peace of mind.

(Also, once my kid dropped my Apple Watch and the screen shattered; I was glad I had AC on it. Stuff happens)

You've apparently alot to learn about insurance.

I've paid over $10,000 in total for insurance for my pickup truck that I've owned since new that I paid $36,000 for new way back in 2001.

It sucks since I've never ever made a claim in all that time.

Welcome to insurance.

Meanwhile where's your vitriol on this against the case maker and screen protector manufacturer?

Why are you singling out Apple here? Seems to me they should be the target of your ire...
