What a ridiculous price. If you lived in MA, my shop could probably do it for half that amount. To be fair, the LCD for that MBA is probably fairly expensive to purchase.

Good old Amex. That's why I also buy my gadgets with them. Keep us updated. I wonder if they will have Apple handle the repair.
The price Apple gives you does not necessarily reflect the actual price it would cost a shop like ours to purchase the part. In this case it may since they are using very high resolution LCDs. But usually, not even close.
So, the MBA screen might cost you less or the same. Thanks for clearing that up. Why don't you quote what your cost is for the screen?
I will have to look up pricing. I am just going by past experience with LCDs for Apple laptops. Most can be had in the range of 70 to 150 with some exceptions. And apple would still likely charge upwards of 400 for those.
Perhaps this new MBA is a big exception. I haven't researched because we have yet to get one in for repairs. At the very least, i expect it to be a bit less than 520 dollars if it is available yet.

Continuing on with my story. AmEx called me today and told me that my claim has been approved, send in my laptop and they will credit my account $1,000 (the maximum protection amount). NICE!!! MY CLAIM HAS BEEN APPROVED!!! wait, what??? Send in my laptop that I paid $1,486.44 for and get back $1,000? That makes no sense whatsoever. The claim examiner says that's how the program works, I send them my laptop and they reimburse me the maximum amount of $1,000 - they don't pay for repairs. I reasoned that this is completely different from what the first rep I was dealing with told me. Even the AmEx website says: "The program administrator will decide whether to have the item repaired or replaced, or to reimburse you up to the amount charged to the Card, and not to exceed the original purchase price." I also said it works out for both sides that I be reimbursed for the repair instead of sending in my laptop for $1,000 when the repair is only $560.59. She immediately agreed and told me to fax over the repair estimate and we'll continue from there. I am going to fax over the repair estimate tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes from here. I think the claim examiner made an honest mistake and immediately corrected herself, she was very helpful.
Got a Purchase Protection Benefit Payment of $595.63 applied to my card which is even more than what Apple said it would cost to repair. I don't know why they did that but I'm not going to complain. The whole process was great, I love American Express.
I dealt with Amex for an iPhone malfunctioning claim and they were absolutely great.
Apple most likely doesn't just replace the LCD. On my 13 Mbp they replaced the entire lid because the hinges were creaking despite the LCD being perfect.
I bet the air also has a glued border and apple just replaces the entire lid. So you're paying for the antennas, metal lid, camera, lcd, hinges, etc.

Sigh... I just pretty much cracked my screen similar to yours, except my whole screen has no image. I know that the actual mobo and stuff are fine though.
$600~ is going to kill me..... Hopefully a local authorized retailer can do it for cheaper
Otherwise I dont know if I can foot that bill lol, used most of my savings at my student wage to buy this Completely my fault though. Life lesson learned.
Anyone know reputable locations to buy the actual LCD? I've built my own PC, fixed screen on many cells before and have all the torx screws ready to disassemble this badboy. Just wondering if it's worth it to go the home route or authorized!?!
