Sounds like a mugging waiting to happen. If you go to a strange area carrying $700 or more in cash based on that flaky ad, you probably deserve to be robbed.

I wish I could say that this guy is lying, but he probably isn't. Where the iPads came from that he's selling, that's the more interesting thought to me...

If anyone had the new iPad two days early, I'm sure Gizmodo would buy it from you for $5000.

The ad is well written, so he seems like a competent human being, and some 3rd party retailers have received stock. It's not impossible.

I don't doubt it's real. Could be bogus, but could be legit.

Obviously some people have gotten their paws on some (Hong Kong & Vietnam).

Very possible.

Though you'd have to either be a moron or very rich (or both) to pay those prices.

I see the seller is in Orange County.... He better not of stole mine from the Ontario hub ;p

Yeah, certain Best Buy locations have probably received their stock by now.
But AFAIK, unless you work in inventory or are a manager, you can't get your hands on these. Once it arrives in warehouse, the Product Processing Manager handles them. So he could have swiped them from a store where he works... (risking your job for like $200?)

I doubt he is going to get many responses though.

Perhaps that answers the where's my order question...I think that is a FedEx name tag under the duct tape on his shirt:eek:

"You may open the box in front of me once I get paid". That's kinda creepy.

Not sure why. If I was buying a sealed ipad I sure as heck would want to open it to verify the box held an ipad. If I were selling a sealed ipad, I want money in hand before the buyer reduces the value by unsealing it. Compromise is hand over the money then open the box before anyone goes anywhere.

The way I've handled CL transactions is meeting at a Starbucks and sitting down to chat, then letting them look over the device until they're satisfied, and then the money changes hands. Although with it being sealed, I guess I can see him wanting the money first. But if he has access to pre-launch iPads and works somewhere like a BestBuy, he probably also has access to a shrink-wrap machine.

I don't know that I myself would just hand someone $850 before I got to look at it very closely, make sure it was in working condition, as advertised, etc. I guess I'm too much of a skeptic. :)

Meet in front of the police station. That way, if anything goes wrong, the police are right there. ;)

I live close by.

I mailed him and he called back and said he was busy tomorrow but could meet on Friday afternoon to complete the "transaction".

I told him I could get my own by Friday afternoon and he said he was busy but to email him at the craigslist email if I was still interested.

His number showed as blocked on my cell.

FAIL.

Seems legit, except...

How will they have a receipt with matching serial?

If apple and a online order that so happened to ship early I guess. Otherwise if a store I doubt youre getting individual receipts for inventory.

I'm betting its probably someone just trying to get phone numbers for related spam.

Otherwise it's legit.

HAHAHA

Of course he'll gladly meet up with you "Friday" afternoon.

The receipt he claims to have is probably just the online order invoice receipt, we all have....which of course has the serial (some of you up top didn't realize).

Well that kind of explains it. What an ******.... He's probably ordered several through preorder and is saying he already has it "in hand". HA.

Good work contacting him. His are sitting in Ontario like the rest of ours.
