I hate this machine. I can watch a youtube video or a normal video for as long as I want when I have the computer on a desk. But when I put it on my lap, even if I try to do my best to not having anything blocking my vents it just starts to sound like a hoover vacuum and run choppy.

Its either a big piece of crappy engineering or really bad testing before it was launched. Steve is eating his own words for bragging during its presentation of how good it was at keeping low cpu temps and stuff. I rather have a machine that burns my legs but runs a F* youtube video properly. Even the iphone can do it (and I dont care if it has different encoding).

And its not even that thin! It is just its design to make it seem to the eye like it is super thin. Plus who the F* cares if the machine weights 1kg or 2kg (like a macbook)?

And good for office stuff??... well... office s**s on Mac... Excel makes no sense, you cant use any of the shortcuts.

$3000 thrown to the F* trash!
Thanks Steve I hope you use that money to clean up our ass after ******** on some CrapBook airs!

I never had core shutdowns. But I put it on my lap... and yes... just discovered the way to make it happen.
And what is the point on Steve bragging how this machine runs at 1.8ghz whereas other machines only at 1.25ghz... when actually it doesnt deliver what is promised and goes down to 1.2 or even 800!!!!!!!!!

Who is with me? and got this thing on Feb 2008 and has felt like he wanted to throw it out of the window like a frisbee since then?

PS: The worst thing is that it runs choppy and stuff when istat actually says the temp is 60C and the fan is at 6200.... WTFFFFFFF??? ... such a useless machine. I remember as soon as I bought it it went up to 80C and never had a core shutdown, and the fan never started sounding until then.. really bad OS updates have made it into such a useless machine instead of fixing the very few problems that mine had.. ¬¬

Edit: And I forgot to mention something... I have had this problem since the beginning, and that is:

I cannot ichat with someone for more than 5 minutes before this machine starts to sound like a hoover vacuum and run so slow that I need to close it for it to cool down... it doesnt matter if its on my desk or my lap .... what a rip off Steve!!!

Would it be possible to reinstall the original software and get it back to where it was?

I love the air but like you i'm kinda disappointed by it. I needed coolbook to make it run properly and if anyone on here says... "blah blah it was not meant to be your only computer..." F U .

I was on two minds whether one should let such postings go and get lost into the oblivion of the net, or respond to set the record straight, but then again this has happened so many times now that it is probably pointless to engage in one more debate of this kind.

Yes there are MBA haters and lovers and that is the way it is because it is not a machine made for all (but then which machine is?). Why don't we stop wasting bandwidth and valuable time by having to go through such pointless arguments? Does not everybody have a life to pursue?

I am sorry if being too philosophical, but then it is in my Greek DNA ...

Sounds like your MBA experience has been horrible - mine has been good but then I didn't purchase until April when most of the maunfacturing problems seem to have gone away. I would return your machine to Apple and get these problems addressed before the warranty is up.

MBA is totally for me who travels alot. 1.6ghz of computing power is just fine with me, but the heat makes the system clocked down to 800mhz and makes it unusable. glad coolbook fixed this problem.

Sorry to hear about your experience

I bought my MBA v1 in Feb of 2008. I never had any problem with the core shut down that I've read about here. To be honest, I've never had a computer I have enjoyed more! The only problem I had was the video cable became damaged and had to visit Apple for over a week. I found Apple's repair service takes much too long for the business professional. Other than that, I found v1 of MBA perfect. So perfect I went out Saturday and bought the v2 with the SSD! I love my MBA! Again, I'm sorry to hear of others having problems.

...and it took you 9 months to express your anger? Also, if you hate it so much, you should get rid of it 4 or 5 months ago so that you can get the most money.

I've expressed my anger like a million times. But I always hoped they would solve the problem somehow so I never decided myself to get rid of it. But now I see that Apple has no way of solving it, and like a bunch of sissies quickly come up with 2.0 to try solve the problem. I can still sell it for $1600.

Worst of all... they never acknowledged that it was a real problem... a real bunch of sissies ¬¬

Install coolbook and set the correct voltages, then you can watch youtube videos without the fan going crazy.

I also replaced my thermal paste, and since there are no warranty stickers you dont void anything :D

Yeah, that's all nice... But the point is, those measures should have been taken care of before they shipped them out. No one should have to install third party software and re-apply thermal paste just to make a laptop functional out of the box.

My friend wants the Air so bad. He bought the new MacBook Pro, only to take it back since he wants the air. Im trying to talk him into the new MacBook. Stuff like this leads me to think that the new macbook is a better option

no the new mb is not the answer. the screens suck. I went through 2 of em and then I just returned it and got my money back and just bought the 2.0MBA. I am completely satisfied with it. the new MB screens have dead and stuck pixels. one guy on the MB forum was on number 5 of the new MBs still trying to get one with a flawless screen. they either have dust behind the glass, dead pixels, or stuck pixels. so straight out the box you turn on a brand new MB and theres a stuck pixel in the middle of the screen.

Don't be persuaded. There are tons of satisfied Air users out there that don't feel the need to vent their frustrations on some pointless forum.

It's a great computer and don't let a few people's opinions dissuade you from checking it out. Just make sure you know what you want the computer for and you won't make the mistake of buying the Air when it is not the right computer for you.

Learn from other's mistakes and do your research and you will be fine.

I'm sorry about your bad experience with your MBA. I'm wondering though, have you ever brought your MBA to the apple store to get it checked out. I know its hard to get your perspective straight especially if you have a bad experience, but not all MBA rev. A have the same problem. Actually, I have an 8 month old MBA 1.6/80 GB and its working nicely. I watch videos a LOT (youtube, Imeem, veoh) and I have no problems. I usually watch anime for HOURS on my MBA and I've never experienced anything similar to your experience.

Just ribbin' ya. Take it to the Apple Store-- often if necessary-- and make sure you register your dissatisfaction with them.

take it back and let them know, I have 2 macbook air's and they are just fine, I run hulu videos with no problem, yeah the fans kick in, but the fan kicks in on my macbook and imac as well. If you buy a computer or any peace of electronics in the first months it's out you're going to get problems...just fact.

I can take it back and ask for a new air, but that will not solve the problem at all. All macbook air 1.0 are that way, and try to explain to the people in the store what the problem is, they dont understand :(

With coolbook my mac is locked at the 1600mhz its supposed to run at, only thing i had to do was install coolbook and lower the voltages, i dont think reapplying thermal paste did any good then shave of a couple of degrees.

It's maxing out at 85C now at 1600mhz, i guess without thermal paste it would be 90C, and the hardware downclocking only starts at 100C.

Only problem left is bootcamp, there is no tool like coolbook for windows xp, and it starts throttling to 1200mhz when its only 75C :(
