My Mac crashed yesterday (less than a year old), the blinking file folder popped up. I rebooted the computer with my start up disk. None of my old data showed up. I didn't have it backed up, I know---Stupid Me! I just bought Time Capsule so I won't make that mistake again.

So here is my question, can I recover my files from my crashed hard drive? And if yes, how? Also, do I need to bring my computer in the the Mac store to have them look at it or is that a lost cause. My husband spent an hour with tech support on the phone to be told that my hard drive crashed and that my data was gone. Yay! That was not what I wanted to hear.

I do have a laptop that I can connect to if that is helpful:)

    yep. probably lost.

depending on where you are in the world, there are places that might look at it besides the apple store. expect to pay $100ish.

if they say they can recover it -- expect to pay an arm and leg for it.

Time Capsule is nice, but overpriced -- unless you want it for wireless backup.

Any normal $70 USB drive would work the same, just wired.

I should have mentioned that my computer is still under warranty under the apple care protection plan.
