I am a student in college, and like to write applications. When I release applications, what does it take(in the US) to release it under a company name instead of my name? My brother is a photographer, and he uses a different name rather than his actual name. Can I release software under my "companies" name, or do I have to register with the government? I presume this depends on the amount of money I or the "company" makes.

Incorporate as a Sole Proprietorship. Often to receive checks or open Business Checking you will have to file a Fictitious Business Name Statement or DBA in the city you do business. Incorporating in Delaware is advantageous if you're an internet company as there are no annual fees. California could cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $500-$1500 depending on attorney.
