Dragging ringtones in Itunes 10

I need help, i have the files (m4r) and 30 seconds and less. When I try to drag it in Itunes 10, it wouldn't appear... help? thanks!

iTunes ringtones cost money even if you already own the song. If is better to use a free ringtone maker like phonezu or mycellspot.com and then sync it up with your phone. Make a ringtone :D

Ok, So First I need to vent. What a pain in the A$$ something as simple as adding a ringtone has been. The OP is not at fault here, I am sure there is just a bug in the software (iTunes10 for me).

To work around this. Copy the ringtone to your desktop. Check the box in the preferences tab "RingTones". You should then see the folder ringtones.

Click the ringtones folder then using the menu under File: Select "Add file to library" select the file from your desktop and select OK.

Once the file appears in your Ringtone folder sync your device.

Not Hard - Impossible

I've followed all the instructions here. Several times. I have the 20 second m4r file all set. There is NO WAY to get it into the ringtones folder. I've tried to drag and drop. I've tried adding to library. I've tried cut and paste. I've tried double clicking on it. I've tried everything anybody has suggested anywhere on the entire internet. Nothing. Clearly, I am doing something wrong, some box uncheked or something, but what can it be? All attempts to get this into iTunes just puts it right into the music folder.

Do you have the latest version of Itunes? I heard it blocks you from making own ringtones...

Before adding your file to iTunes, go to 'Preferenced\Advanced' and make sure both 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' AND 'copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library' are checked.

I have a Ringtones folder in my iTunes Music folder. I just copy the files there and manually add them into Itunes then sync.

I'm sure there's a better way but getting custom Ringtones onto the iPhone should be a little more seamless.

Here is my method for making a ringtone. Hope this will help anyone having problems.

How to make a ringtone in itunes

Before adding your file to iTunes, go to 'Preferenced\Advanced' and make sure both 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' AND 'copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library' are checked.

I usually don't make them longer than 30 seconds.

Step 1 Open iTunes.

Step 2 Find the song that you want to make into a ringtone.

Step 3 Listen to the song and find the part of it you want to use. The chorus may be a good place to start.

Step 4 Write down the start and stop times of the clip.

Step 5 Right-click the song and select "Get Info."

Step 6 Click the "Options" tab.

Step 7 Type in the start time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Start Time" in the minutes:seconds (i.e., 2:01) format.

Step 8 Type in the end time of your ringtone in the text box next to "Stop Time." Make sure the ringtone is no more than 30 seconds long.

Step 9 Click "OK."

Step 10 Right-click your song again and select "Convert Selection to AAC." Wait for iTunes to convert your song. It will create a duplicate version.

Step 11 Right click on your new duplicate version you just created and click on show in explorer.

Step 12 Change the extension to m4r you will get a warning message, just click OK.

Step 13 Drag this new m4r file into iTunes. It will automatically put it in the Ringtones folder.

Step 14 Delete the created m4a clip in iTunes. (Mine is usually still highlighted). You won't get a message asking if you want to move the file to the recycle bin since you changed the extension to m4r, the m4a file is no longer there.

Step 15 Remember to change the start and stop times in the original file to play the whole song.

These steps are for a Windows machine. As a side note, I usually click on the artist/album option of the song I want in the browser mode of iTunes. It makes it easier to see the selections and less crowded on the screen this way.

Did you remember to drag this 'new' .m4r file into iTunes as stated in #13 above? The one you see in your main music list is not really there. After you change the extention, it is no longer listed as a song. If you click on the file in iTunes it should have an exclamation point by it saying it can't locate the file.

Try dragging the new .m4r file into iTunes and see what happens.

Also, Before adding your file to iTunes, go to 'Preferenced\Advanced' and make sure both 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' AND 'copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library' are checked.

No not new. Is your iTunes set up to import CD's in .mp3 format? If so change this to AAC.

I'm sorry but for the life of me I cannot get the extention to change.

I'm using windows, but it will not let me edit the extention. Always keeps it as m4a. HELP!

It should allow you to change it. It will pop up with a warning message, but just click ok to that.

No Love

I have followed the steps and the file is listed in my newly created itunes ringtones folder on both my mac and my iphone. However, when I go to select a ringtone on my actual iphone, it does not give me the option of selecting the file I created and that is listed in my itunes ringtones folders. Any help greatly appreciated.

m4r ringtone

Apple doesn't want you to be able to make a free ringtone they want you to pay a fee to download ringtones so they make it very difficult to accomplish. I use a free converter program to convert the ringtone from mp3 to mp4. I also had no luck with Itunes. Read the help file at mycellspot.com for more info.

See my post #34. After that you should be able to hook up your phone and drag the ringtone to the phone. It will show up in your settings app.

What happens when you double click on the file. What is the extension of the file.
