What sort of file do you save them as? Is it possible with PS etc?

I have an image that I want to use for a folder (placed in the sidevar of Finder) rather than the usual folder image...

You could simply save your fancy new folder icon in any ol' format as long as it has an icon preview deal saved with the file (I believe PS does that by default). Then Get Info on that file, select the icon and copy it (command-c). Then Get Info on the folder you want to apply it to, select it's icon and paste it (command-v).
