Does it look like something that is worth $80? It is supposedly just a external USB sound card (I believe). Also, on the product page it mostly talks about movies and music, would it improve sound in games?

The X-Mod is $72.95 on Amazon, compared to the Griffin Firewave which is only $64.67 and can do 5.1 surround sound.

The Griffin Firewave does not boost sound quality, rather all its supposed to do is give you surround sound. Since I don't have 5.1 speakers this would not apply to me.

I am still wondering if it would boost sound on gaming, if any. Does anybody know anything about this?

I have a feeling you would probably be better off just investing in a good set of powered 2.1 speakers. There are plenty of speaker threads you can look through for recommendations.
