Hi All,

I have been attempting to track down an Apple Pay issue on my Watch by restoring both by iPhone 8 (iOS 11.1.1) and Apple Watch Series 3 (Watch OS 4.1.0). First I deleted all my credit cards on both devices at iCloud.com and then removed them on both devices. Then, I restores the iPhone 8 to factory settings and then restored my iPhone from a back-up.

Next, I wanted re-set up my wallet. In the process of doing this, I discovered that all of my credit cards were available for me to add back to my wallet. Even though I had deleted these credits cards prior to restoring to factory settings, they were there along with my credit card numbers.

Deleted should mean deleted! Gone! Not certain that I like this feature of Apple Pay.

Backups are not supposed to have Apple Pay info.

Now, can see iCloud Keychain remembering credit card info. Just don't recall if those were presented to me when setting up new iPhone this last go-round.

Did you turn off wallet in iCloud device settings? Seems like the cards were re-synced after you deleted them from iCloud.com

Two potential causes:
Do you have these cards on another iOS device? If so, they are in iCloud keychains.

Second, did you do an iTunes encrypted backup before or after you deleted the cards. If you backed up then deleted the cards, then when you restored that backup they returned, that makes sense.

Backups do contain Apple Pay information.

Both iTunes and iCloud.

Hi All,

Thank you to all that replied. Answers to the questions asked:

- Did I turn off wallet in iCloud settings. I do not see a way to turn off wallet in iCloud settings. I did, as I placed in my post, delete all credit cards in iCloud before I did my back-up.
- Do you have any other cards in iOS devices. No. Just in the iPhone and Watch. These were both deleted before the back-up.
- Did I back-up before or after I deleted the cards. All credit cards were deleted in iOS devices before the back-up.

Based on the above, there should be no credit card information once I restored. I am uncertain where the credit card information is coming from.

In all fairness. You said you deleted before restoring. Not creating a new backup.

The only possibility is ApplePay wasn’t overridden in your new backup. Sometimes it’s best to delete the backup and create a fresh one.

Apple ID - iCloud - Scroll down to Wallet

If this remains on , the the devices may have had enough time to re-sync, regardless of which was deleted first

Hi Mirolin and NoBoMac,

I would be delighted to go through the process again, first deleting all back-ups, then backing up the phone with all credit card information deleted, then restoring from the new backup.

However, from the information provided by NoBoMac, it appears that as through iTunes back-ups do not include credit card information. Where then do you suppose the credit card information is hiding?

Still do not see it. When i access iCloud I get a series of icons none of which make a reference to ApplePay. Then when I select Settings, I get a list of all of my devices. Only the Watch and iPhone have status flags that show ApplePay. If I select each of these devices, I will get a list of credit cards that are associated with each device. I can now select remove all to delete the credit cards from the device. This is what I did.

Please tell me where I can find the "Wallet" settings in iCloud because I do not see it.

Click on iCloud, not the device name. Then scroll down to wallet and toggle it off. Cards are kept in the wallet, hence the re-sync

Or can just sign out of iCloud, wipe the phone, don't connect to iCloud when restarts. Go to iCloud.com to delete the cards/verify gone. Then proceed with re-setup.

I know the answer to this. I spoke to an Apple support tech about this very subject.
The credit card information is not stored locally on your phone. In fact it is not stored anywhere. When you add a credit card to wallet, a unique identifier is created and stored with the pay system. This info is used by the bank’s Apple Pay system to track transactions. No one can hack your phone or the system because your actual cc number does not exist, only the identifier. That identifier is kept on file with the cc companies’ Apple Pay system and tied to your Apple ID, so it will show as available to add to wallet when signed in to your device.
You can have a brand new phone and those cards will be available to add to wallet, as I did on my X. The cards are not part of any backup encrypted or otherwise.

ETA: I believe the tech told me the only way to get those cards off your file is to call the bank (credit card issuer) to remove it. Each bank and card company now have support for each electronic pay system like Apple Pay, android pay etc.
