What are you using these logos for exactly? The visual design is solid(I can nit-pick if you'd like :) ) but without knowing what it's being used for leaves the viewer at a big disadvantage.

I liked the old one better too.

I see the resemblance. I was working off of a photo, and I would never plagiarize, but with a bluejay, or cardinal etc. There are only so many directions you can go.

I prefer the version on the right, but thats just my sense of taste. Personally I think its a very solid concept, and I agree, when your working off a real-life object, animal etc there are only a very few ways you can go with them, and nearly all if not all will have been done before.

I like the one on the right. I'd say make the eye and beak black to balance with the little black accent you have on his head otherwise it's awesome.

I think..just the eye black would look better, and that "E" in the back..not the beak. ...I think shades of grey would offer better balance....hmmm.

Oh I meant the outline of the beak should be black and the patch in front of the eye should also be black and connect with the eye.

Your logo needs to be simplified. Too much going on, especially around the eye.

    *thumbs up*

but you might want to simplify it a little, (i.e., what is the deal with the thing in front of it's eyes?)

    Nice logo. A few suggestions:

    - The black seems out of place in the revised logo. It's unnecessary, really. I'd replace the bit that was black the light blue you are using.

    - The border, where the light blue and white meets has a strange angle (top left of logo). You can tell there's a bit of an overlap or something there.

    - I would rework the bottom of the logo, curling the neck up and over to form a visual 'J' out of the entire logo - but do it subtly.

    Just my 2¢.

The concept looks good, although you do need to simplify it a little more. You see how more simple the Blue Jays logo looks, and has a nice "flow" to it? Also play around with gradients and shadows especially around the eye and beak of the bird. Make the bird have a little more depth, so it gives off a more realistic feel. But you're off to a great start, especially considering you aren't working with Illustrator.

As said by Richard.mac, what is the logo for? Design must have a purpose and can only be judged as to whether it is fit for purpose or not. Any other comments are just going to be based on personal opinion of if it looks nice or not. Tell us what it is a logo for and we can give more constructive comments.

The black looks a bit more menacing. Then again blue jays are pretty aggressive birds...
