You can fade the ending of one song into the beginning of the next one toslightly overlap song, just like a radio Dj,when you use iTunes. Thecross-fade setting is the amount of time between the end of the fade-out from the first song and the start of the fade-in to the second song.

I thought this setting only took effect when playing music through iTunes?

I see no setting available for this type of playback on the actual iPod itself.

Yes you can with Rockbox installed into your iPod but it only works for some models. Google rockbox and check if your type of iPod model is compatible and then go to this YouTube link to see a sample of the crossfade effects. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu28gzTL1N4
