You can fade the ending of one song into the beginning of the next one toslightly overlap song,just like a radio Dj,when you use iTunes. Thecross-fade setting is the amount of time between the end of the fade-out from the first song and the start of the fade-in to the second song.
 
I thought this setting only took effect when playing music through iTunes?

I see no setting available for this type of playback on the actual iPod itself.

To cross-fade songs on your Ipod,you have to play your ipod songs through iTunes on your computer. Connect your ipod to your computer and then connect you computer to a stereo or connect speakers (or headphones) to your computer.Press Option(mac)orCtrl-alt(windows)when you lanuch iTunes; then select ipod in the iTunes Source pane.
