For those who want a TL;DR, Codeweavers are working on their own version of FEX, a program to run Windows Games on ARM. It is believed to be used on Valve's Steam Frame and that Valve is actively helping development.

For those who want a TL;DR, Codeweavers are working on their own version of FEX, a program to run Windows Games on ARM. It is believed to be used on Valve's Steam Frame and that Valve is actively helping development.

It's so frustrating to me that Apple doesn't address some of this themselves, in ways only a 1st party can.

So much potential being left untouched.

Apple has consistently ignore gaming on the Mac. I know they've made some improvments to metal and what not, but overall its been a tepid response.

Now playing the devil's advocate, I can see why Apple doesn't invest in a wine implementation. There's no money in it for them. Unlike Crossover which gets a subscription, apple won't see any $$. Also no revenue from the MAS given that its a windows game being played. There's no financial upsides,

I will pushback a little here in that I think there is huge upside in way more interest in Macs overall.

I know more than a few people who would spend more money on better and more powerful Macs (or Macs at all!) that otherwise goes to their Windows builds.

I use my 24gb m3 air as essentially a steam deck and it works well. But Apple could do a lot more to make it accessible. It's such a shame. They use the best fabs to create the most power efficienct chips so they can create really fast fanless/near fanless laptops with long battery life and mini pc's that fit in a handbag and don't look like gigantic RGB towers with massive fans like the overpriced Nvidia crap but they still don't bother to take it seriously.

How much more, and how few people?

I tried gaming on my a mac Mini and it was largely a failure, in so far I had to upgrade to a M4 Studio, and at that point the price of a widows gaming rig was fairly close to that of the studio (the studio was a bit cheaper).

don't get me wrong, I love my M4 Max Studio, its a great computer, and that is quiet fast, but when playing games through crossover, my older AMD 3700x/7800XT running CachyOS largely runs rings around it.

The M4 Mac Mini couldn't even play Fallout 4 decently through crossover.

The GPU on many of the Mac product line still cannot compete with Nvidia's product line. Maybe the top tier M5 Pro, but at that point you're talking about top tier dollars as well. For the most part, for the past 6 years, Apple's GPU still lagged well behind what Nvidia was doing. I can't say how the M5's GPU, but its safe to say that by and large the majority of Apple's Mac product line largely fell short of what Nvidia was doing.

As for silent and quiet, I owned a M4 Pro mini and tried to game on it, the thing was quiet, because apple's fan curve kept the fan speed low, the thing was cooking itself near 100c and throttling. I used Macs Fan Control to manually adjust the speed which worked great, but the silent running was thrown out the window.

As for RGB, yes, many people like that, but there's a lot of mini-towers that have little to no RGB. My gaming setup, has no RGB.
