I cannot go back to (or even look at) CRT monitors anymore now that all the monitors I have at home are all good quality LCD. My TV is also LG 24' LCD TV, my computer monitors are ACD 20" and 23" and the rest are notebook LCDs. CRT just eats up too much space unnecessary and hurts your eye because of its lighting. I don't get any eye strain from my ACDs even if I am glued to my Macs for a whole day (which I sometimes do during the weekend).

Not to be off topic, but while we talk about it..

Let's clear one thing up: Good CRTs have a better looking picture than LCDs.

But I would like to clear up on thing... At least in terms of an immediate human threat, LCDs are vastly more environmentally friendly than CRTs. There is one major issue that exists with CRTs which is the entire reason for switching to more expensive flat panel technology...

EXPOSURE TO %%%RADIATION%%%

Two types of radiation: XRAY and EMF.

Flatpanels produce no x-rays and ultra low EMF (only related to the backlight transformer).

XRAYS won't likely rot your eyes.. I was an 80s child who has spent tens of thousands of hours in front of the glass tube, so I can say it didn't "ruin my eyesight", but they can cause cancer, as well as EMF.. and there are more shocking problems which are lesser known but scienfically proven such as ** * MERCURY POISIONING * ** ... Not just the mercury in the tube itself when its disposed, BUT xrays will rot amalgam fillings in your teeth, producing abnormally high mercury ingestion levels which poison your body and cause diseases such as fibro-mialgia, alziehmers, and others..

The highly questionable health impact of CRTs is the fundamental reason why I ripped them out of my iMacs and reengineered them with LCD panels (which was quite! a project...)

Continuing off-topic tangent (sorry)

Is there any proof that EMFs are bad for you? We have a huge one wrapped around our planet that protects us from radiation. I'd like to keep that one, please! We also have produced many little EMFs all over the place. The power supply for every computer generates one, so are you going to get rid of those too? Anywhere there is electical current, there is an EMF - so LCDs screens must produce them too.

I'm not saying we shouldn't try to make things safer, but I think most people have gone to far. We're all going to die of something eventually and we are no threat to earth, that's bulls#!t. If we cause mother earth too much trouble, she'll get rid of us and come up with some smarter species. She'll be fine, trust me... at least until the sun dies out in ~4 billion years.

Power usage?

I´m sorry for bumping an old thread but I´m interested in the cost of the electricity over time. CRTs are said to consume a lot more power than LCDs so they are supposed to be more expensive over their live time than the LCDs.

Does anybody have any information about this? I really don´t have any feeling about how much the electricity cost for a monitor each year and how much I could save by using a LCD instead of a CRT.
