We've been consistently having trouble with our Canon MP170 printer.
Randomly to be able to print via a mac on the network, we have to reboot the machine. It always fixes that problem.

We have adapted (or installed) some new Windows and Linux machines in our house lately. The Linux machines are printing to the now sharing G4 (450 mhz version). I have made all necessary changes in preferences.

I tried connecting to the printer from windows from several machines. One machine looked like it was freezing when trying to connect, others took only a few seconds or so to connect. However, no windows computer will print. (When trying to readd the printer, random times it will say it cannot connect to the printer/find it and I have to reboot the mac, rebooting the windows machine does nothing to help).

Any ideas? My guesses are a failing USB controller (unlikely) or crappy drivers for the printer itself.
