I get this cryptic message (which opens as a file in TextEdit) every time my wife boots her (2008) iMac... on which we just installed El Capitan.

Any clues?

This is just guessing on my part, but it may have something to do with the hard disk or filesystem. Open Disk Utility and perform a First Aid operation on Macintosh HD. When the file opens in TextEdit, can you track the origin of the file down? You can do this by right-clicking on the title in the title bar. Perhaps this provides further clues.
