Just in case anyone searches the site in future with the same problem I had...

I run an old G4 Gigabit Ethernet with a Sonnet PCI SATA card and a 1TB WD Black as a server for the other macs in the house (and particularly the Apple TV). Everything was fine apart from the fact that it would spontaneously just stop responding to iTunes, which would then be impossible to kill even in command line (sudo kill and all the rest).

After all sorts of measures, it turns out that all I needed to do was uncheck "Put Hard Disks To Sleep Whenever Possible" in Energy Saving settings. It's run flawlessly for a couple of weeks now.

So now I'm back to being in love with my G4 :)
