Does anyone know how the current apps will look on the iPhone 4 hi-res display? Would developers need to create a hi-res version of their apps?

They should all work without issues. Text and controls will be hi-res because they are provided by the operating system.

If developers will add hi-res graphics elements, the new iPhone will use them.

My understanding is like the 3.0 upgrade, all iPhone Apps will need to have a new api added and recompiled and then resubmitted to work with multitasking, not just the audio apps, but all apps otherwise they either cannot be multitasked or cannot be run in 4.0. That is a significant overhaul. Which means that many many apps that you use will need to release a 4.0 tested version prior to June 21st/June 24th.

Yes, you are correct when saying that prior apps need to be changed to take advantage of 4.0 multitasking capabilities. However, it is incorrect to say that they cannot be run in 4.0. If the app does not need multitasking or the dev is chooses not to provide such functionality, the app will continue to run as it did prior to 4.0.

I'm sure the larger apps such as Fieldrunners, DoodleJump, and AngryBirds will quickly upgrade their apps to make them look better on the display.
