I just tried to buy an HP ENVY 17 but ended up returning two with maxed out specs because both had different issues wrong with them 30 minutes out of the box. IMO and from experience their build quality for what they advertise as a "premium notebook" is complete junk.

Processors get hot, and the heat has to go somewhere while gaming your computer should get very hot because of your high end graphics card, I would be worried if your computer was not getting hot.

Get the MBP it will be about the same performance for about the same price, plus the battery life is x5 as long and the build quality is top of the line.
five times battery life  is the Envy battery really that weak?

I'm going to have to be the one to say this and I don't really want to be, but basically man don't switch. If you have to post on here asking people to come up with reasons why you should, you probably don't have a very strong need for it. For what its worth the Envy 14 is a great machine so if anything exchange it for that. Its been updated most recently and is still a great laptop.

I had a envy 17 with the i7 840qm, 8gb of ram and ati5850 1gb. I got about an hour to an hour and a half with anything i did. If they charged a bit more and made the computer better quality they would be in a lot better shape.

What are people doing for car adapters? I saw the Apple airline adapter, but it doesn't charge the battery.

Searching the MBP forum shows someone using an inverter, which I'd like to avoid.

Thanks, That'll do just well.

And this will be a terrible and dumb question to ask. I was under the impression all i7's are quad core (and with HT, mimic 8 cores). But a lot of posts on this forum refer to apple's i7 as duo core. Are they simply mistake or is there something I'm missing here?

eh. no quads in the MBP. We will relish such a day.

i7/i5 are dual core w/ hyperthreading. So four cores, logical.

Ugh, rather disappointing, but I don't think I fully utilize the full quad anyway.

In terms of switchable graphics, does anyone here torrent shows (350MB, not HD)? Does it use the internal gpu when watching them, or the 330M?

Let's see now, about the same price?

Starting price:
$2,299.00 - 17" MacBook Pro
$1,399.00 - 17" HP ENVY

$1,799.00 - 15" MBP
$1,199.00 - 15" HP
Yep, looks about the same to me... :)

you're not comparing the upgrades of the envy to equal that of a mac....but good try.

Sorry in advance for this post, but this is a question for the OP.

I am not a Mac owner yet, but I am in a similar situation as you. I own an HP dv3t model that is suffering overheating issues to the point of powering off, as well as the occasional black screens when doing medium tasks and some games. It has been a pain to get tech support to update my warranty in time for the next school year to start for this thing to be serviced. How long have you owned your Envy? I might consider selling this notebook and purchasing a MBP, but I find it difficult to make a feasible decision based on this because it is over a year old and I worry about losing some money off it.

When you do sell yours, are you going the eBay route or a different one? And how much are you going to lose overall? Sorry that this post doesn't reflect the questions you have about a MBP, but at least I found someone who I can relate too. Thanks!

What are you talking about.
17" Envy Base - $1399
-i7-720qm
-HD 5850
-6GB ram
-500gb HDD

17" MBP Base - $2299
-i5-540M
-330M
-4GB ram
-500gb HDD

Add an i7 (i7-620M) and add ram for 8gb total and you come out to $2,899.00. Add 2gb more ram to the Envy for a total of $1,499.99. $1400 difference.

HALF the price.

15" Envy Base - $1099
i5-430M
HD 5830
4GB Ram
500GB HDD

15" MBP Base - $1,799.00
i5-520M
330M
4GB Ram
320gb HDD

Let's even them out - same proccessor / hdd size = MBP $1,899.00 vs Envy $1,199.99. $700 difference.
