eMachines E525
Intel Celeron 2.2ghz
2gb RAM
15'6" Widescreen (1366x768)
220gb Hardrive
Integrated Mobile Intel Graphics
Windows 7 Home Premium

Battery it about 2 and a half hours maybe.

It's not a BAD computer at all, it has Wifi N which makes it great as a browsing computer. But obviously I can't wait for my MBP.

2004 Powerbook g4 12" 1.33 ghz. We're moving to Australia for a year and need something lighter and more powerful than our current laptops (husband has a just-as-old PC laptop) We've been able to put it off this long because I have a decent imac.

I really wanted to get an MBA, but I didn't like the math:
Maxed out MBA = 1/2 the weight of base MBP for nearly 2x the cost. Money is too tight to spend more than about a grand on a laptop. (hello 2 airplane tickets to Oz) The weight/size IS important since we're backpacking, but still...

All prices are US student (if available) unless otherwise noted:

1) MBP 1099$
2) 11" MBA base 949$
-small hard drive/not enough ram/no firewire
3) 13" MBA ultimate 1729$
-expensive/no firewire
4) ipad (version 2.0) 499-829$
-probably would get 3g version to have it available on the road
-in order to be affordable the ssd size is extremely small
5) iphone 4 549$ CAD (estimate on price after release of iphone5) **
-possibly too small for day to day usage, but multitudes of other pluses.

If I got an ultimate MBA there's no more money for anything else. We're two people that both use computers a lot, so the only way this would swing is if it was temporary and we bought something else after we arrive in Oz and have saved up some more money.

Right now a base (upcoming) MBP is looking like the best solution and adding either an ipad2 or an iphone4 or 5 depending on price points and ssd size.

I don't know, I'm going to hem and haw about the best solution until the very last moment. In the end, a lot will depend on what has come out by the time we leave (at the very latest, mid August)

Any thoughts?

I use a

Toshiba A-200 15" screen
1280x720
Windows 7
Core 2 Duo 1.67 GHz
3 GB RAM
some weak onboard graphics card
120 GB HDD
- kinda loud
- gets really hot - to the point I can't watch a 720p video, 1080p no way
- the battery is completely dead (at its best: it would last about 1 hour of video, or 2 hours with 10% brightness and only using MS Office)

I want a MBP 13" IF it will have a good graphics card. If not I will go for the 15" or the 13" MBA. Still deciding on that :)

on my 2.0GHz 9400M aluminum macbook right now

it's certainly more than enough for normal use, but I have a bit of a weakness for games ;)

hoping for a 13" MBP with SNB i3 and a 520M or 420M

So obviously many of us here want to get the new MBP when it will be announced next week (fingers crossed). Feel free to post your current laptop (PC or Mac) spec, and may be do a comparison with the current generation MBP.

I currently have a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 from 2007 (I think) with the following specs:

Intel C2D T7100 (1.8GHz)
RAM 2Gb
GPU: nVidia Quadro NVS 140M
Intel Intel X25-M 80GB
Battery life: now ~1.5 hours
Screen size: 15.6" (wide, 1680x1050)
Weight: too much
Size: too big
Windows 7 Pro

Love the Thinkpad keyboard btw! Much better than the one that was in my 2009 MBP :(.

I would like to get a new 13" MBP in case the resolution of the screen would be upgraded to 1440x900 like in the MBA. An anti glare screen would also be great :D

My current computer:

late 2007 ASUS f5 15 inch
CPU: 1.6 ghz pentium duo
RAM: 2.5 GB
HDD: 160GB
OS: Vista home premium
Battery Life: 1 hour at best:(

Reasons for upgrade:
Battery is definitely fading, discrete graphics which were slow when they were new, hard drive space is now really stretched, I really like using OSX and the design of macbooks is awesome! *takes big breath*

Can't wait till the new pros get released!:)

Be aware that if you buy tech products (i.e. apple stuff) in Oz it's always going to be quite a bit more expensive than in the US or Canada.

I'm on a Late 2007 Aluminum MacBook Pro 15''
2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
120 GB HDD
15'' Anti-Glare (1440x900)
2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
GeForce 8600M GT (128 MB vRAM - WOW. I had no idea it SUCKED this much hahahaha, hopefully the refresh brings about a 1 GB vRAM card.)
Battery Life = Originally 6 Hours.
Weight: Maybe 5 lbs?
OS: Mac OSX.

Same as me.

I'm thinking about splurging on a 17" MBP, especially if it has a better graphics card, CPU, and/or storage drives than the 15".

Hopefully the price difference (which is presently $400-500) will decrease a lot, now our dollar value is almost the same.

I'm absolutely shocked to see so many of you are using PC laptops.

Heck I've got a Dell M6500 precision workstation, i7 920XM quad core, 16 gb ram, dual ssd, nvidia fx3800, a hp 8440p workstation with ssd and 8gb ram and i still went out and bought a 13" Macbook Pro last week knowing an update was imminent. I'd been without a MBP for a year and for me the 13" MBP is basically the perfect ultraportable. Nearly went for the MBA but I need more RAM.

Guess what, I'll be at the Apple store again this week if a new one is released, my credit card is taking a real hammering!

Will be going from

Asus UL30VT with

Intel ULV SU7300
4gb RAM
Geforce G 210M/Intel something IGP (switchable)
500gb 5400 RPM hdd
no optical
13.3"
Windows 7 Home
Battery time about 4-8 hours depending on the used gfx (intel vs nvidia) and what I'm doing. Have dropped maybe an hour since I got it where it could last a little longer than that.

Going to get a MBP 13.3" after the refresh.. :)

Thought you guys might be interested in THIS

The price points all match! I might be dropping $1199 soon :D
(luckily I can still easily get >$700 for my macbook)

Using an AcerAspire 4935G, specs as listed below:

  • 2.53 Ghz with a C2D processor
  • 4GB DDR2 RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS 512MB
  • 320GB HDD

Reason for changing out of it is because it's being my main machine for 2 years running or so (which explains the frequent blackouts and sloowwww pace of the machine).
