I have an iPhone 7 currently. I've had it for almost a year now (5 more days till one year. ). However, I don't know what I should do at this point. I'm eying the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. I'm not eying the iPhone 8 because they are practically the same phone out of the box.

So here is what I know about the iPhone X in accordance to myself.
  • Animoji is cool. But just like 3D Touch, I will use it all the time for a couple weeks and then never use it again.
  • I love portrait lighting, a big plus since this one is one both cameras.
  • Don't care about dual image stabilization.
  • The design is OKAY but the notch may bug me at some points, I'll get use to it most likely.
  • Face ID, I like the idea but I have the World's most anti-privacy friends. I'm also gullible, so they can probably tell me to look at them while holding my phone to my face and they are in. I'm stupid like that. :(
  • The glass design is amazing, the iPhone 8 has it too, however, I'm not careful one bit. I dropped my iPhone 7 down stairs multiple times before (luckily no crack screens, for some reason; however I'm not complaining). Oh and I can't afford decent cases (Cue the "YOU CAN AFFORD AN IPHONE, MACBOOK BUT NOT A CASE?!?!?!", it's complicated. )
  • Anything else I either forgot about or just don't care for.

Now the iPhone 8 Plus ... drum roll please ...
  • First of all, LESS EXPENSIVE. Hey! Maybe I'll be able to afford that case if I choose this option.
  • I love big phones. The iPhone X seems like a downgrade to me because of the size. Maybe this is just me.
  • The gold finish is amazing. :)
  • I may invest in wireless charging. ("YOU CAN AFFORD A WIRELESS CHARGER BUT NOT A CASE?!?!?!")
  • True tone is nice, the iPhone X has it.
  • The Super Retina display is a beauty, but since I'm coming from an iPhone 7, this would still be an upgrade. (Both in fact, would be an upgrade.)
  • Never had a chance to experience portrait mode, seems interesting.
  • And portrait lighting too!
  • But the iPhone X has them both.

So behold! As you can see, I could care less about Animoji, I will get use to the notch and the iPhone X design and everything else the iPhone 8 Plus has that I care about (except the Portrait Lighting on the front facing camera). So here is where I ask you, should I get the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8 or just stick with my iPhone 7? Or get the iPhone 7 Plus, that is not out of the question?

There's also a poll too. :)

Taking your comparisons into consideration, I would possibly look at that iPhone 8 Plus. Seems to be more in line of what you're looking for in terms of size and upgraded features. Most of the features iPhone X has aside from the major differences with Face ID, OLED display and different form factor. But either way, you have 14 days if you were unsure of the device purchase.

Get the X.
It has a similar size as the non-plus iPhone, thus better usability (seriously, the plus phone might look okay at first, but daily usability is a bit annoying with a phone that big), and it has all the fancy dual camera setup that the non-plus iPhones never get.

If you are not going to use a case, and you are not careful, IMO I would keep the 7 as it makes no sense to invest $850-1,000 on a more delicate phone.

Keep the 7....
Okay, thank you. :)

The OLED display is honestly really nice. However, I'm positive that is one of the reasons why these phones got a price gouge. And looking at the S8 OLED and the iPhone 8 Plus LED Display, there is no comparison. Maybe I should be considered blessed they give us 14 days to exchange the phone, because if the iPhone 8 Plus does not cut it out or I don't tell a difference, I can just upgrade to the X.

.....because if like me you have several apps that are opened with fingerprint ID it could quite some time before developers embrace facial recognition and reason # 2 as mentioned, the iPhone 8 Plus is not pocket friendly.
Yeah. That is another concern about Face ID, not only with my privacy but also apps that use Touch ID. I have the Spectrum TV app and I always forget my password so I just use Touch ID to login. It may take a while before they adopt (and others) Face ID login.

Yeah. Maybe my iPhone 7 is the most indestructible one made because it survived many falls from the stairs (on a college campus ... in multiple buildings). However, I've never dropped it on concrete sidewalk or the parking lots, I usually drop it in the buildings, so maybe that's why. However, maybe you're right, best not to take any chances unless if I do get a case and Apple Care and Jesus, the Holy Sprit and another other thing that can protect the god damn phone. :) (also, I don't know if you are have seen it, but I've seen tons of videos of iPhone 8 Plus drop tests, it failed miserably; if with the minor drops; so maybe it is best to get a case with the phone.)

I still using my 6 and it's perfectly fine. So your 7 has a lot of miles left on it.
