I already made a post about this in another subforum a while ago but I think it'll fit better in this one.

For the last couple of months I've been compiling builds of more recent opensource software releases for early 32bit Intel based Mac systems running 10.5 Leopard and later. The collection has grown to a respectable size already, featuring over 100 custom builds and is still growing strong so it should be particularly interesting to owners of first gen 32bit-only Intel machines or later Intel Macs still running on OS X 10.5 Leopard or Snow Leopard.

The archive contains builds of emulators and software libraries, as well as webbrowsers and a whole bunch of freeware games.

I'm still adding more stuff every now and then, so be sure to check the archive regularly for further updates.

Nice work! Thank you for letting us know!

One thing which could help with making sure folks with 32-bit Intel Macs do see and make use of your builds is to mirror them on a place like the Macintosh Garden — especially for software whose last release for 32-bit Intel was prior to 2011.

Thanks, I've already uploaded a bunch of my builds to the garden and created a forum topic where I notify users about recent additions.

Jeepers!!!

..fantastic work!!!!
..and Duke Nuken - YAY!!!!

does anyone know how to make these work?
I downloaded eduke32_r4292.7z.
Then went to Macintoshgarden and downloaded 7zx_171.dmg.

..a temp file appears for a second then disappears..and then nothing???

Ta Doc, I’ll give that a whirl.
I’ve since found nukem in the garden, but there’s a heap of these builds I want to explore.

just wanted to remind you folks that the current MacPorts still works on Tiger and many many thousands of current open source software projects build there.

Yesterday I pushed libc++ for Tiger intel and related software. The toolchains are reasonably robust still.

Just ridiculous - you have a full binary built of Arx Libertatis!!! I've waited years for someone to do that. I tried compiling it a few times but it just didn't work on my machine.

Thanks, I'm considering doing build requests again btw., so if you have any OpenSource game you'd like to see ported to Intel OSX 10.5 that's not already in my archive you can post it here and I'll take a look, provided I have enough time ofc.

Well, since you're offering...

Two open source games I've been trying to get working (but also failing miserably at) have been Bstone (an open source port of Blake Stone) and Shockolate (an open source port of System Shock). Shockolate already has Mac binaries, but last I tried them, they had some kind of library linking issue my poor lizard brain couldn't figure out.

I was able to get the Blake Stone games working but Shockolate has issues with Leopards outdated OpenGL drivers so if I cant find a way to bypass that problem it will have to be 10.6+ only.

Alright here's a 32bit 10.5 / 10.6 compatible binary of shockolate 0.5.10.4. On Leopard there're some SDL 2.0.3 related sound issues and the game crashes if you enter the savegame screen from the main menu - these problems are not present on later Mac OS versions strangely so running this on Snow Leopard or later is very much recommended.

Awesome! Thank you so much!

A question about your Wineskin engines - I've noticed you've even got engines for 5.x WINE. Have those been tested to run in 32-bit 10.5/10.6? I thought I read somewhere in the release notes on the WineHQ that 3.5 was the last version of WINE to be supported on anything below 10.8.

Yea all the Wineskin engines should work on anything above 10.5.7 up to 10.14 but not sure which Wineskin wrapper you'd need for using them on the later OSX releases - I've had to mess around with the source quite a bit and revert about 2 dozen patches to get the 5.X engines to build on 10.5 but they work - i provide no guarantees for 100% compatibility tho.

Btw, I've been able to fix the Shockolate sound bugs on 10.5 but the loadscreen crash is still present. Saves can still be loaded from within the HUD menu tho so the issue isn't game breaking:

The newer version of System Shock seems to hang; it doesn't display a window or anything, but I can hear the audio of the open cutscene in the background; I tested this on both a 32-bit MacBook Pro running 10.6 and a Core 2 Duo MacBook running 10.7.

I also tried running your port of OpenJK on both of those Macs, and it seems to crash with the following error in the log:

SDL Version Compiled: 2.0.9
SDL Version Linked: 2.0.9
SDL_Init( SDL_INIT_VIDEO ) FAILED (The video driver did not add any displays)
----- CL_Shutdown -----
-----------------------
IN_Init called before SDL_Init( SDL_INIT_VIDEO )

try replacing the included SDL2 framework with the one from the old System Shock app - the updated one is really only recommended for OS X Leopard users.

The custom built Leopard SDL2 library doesn't seem to be fully compatible with later OS X releases so that explains all of your other problems as well - you can just replace them with the newer official builds from http://libsdl.org/release
