Getting rid of annoying or tedious steps is welcomed.

Apple could also put the last 4 or 5 running apps a person is using on the lock screen. When the user face-unlocks the phone the apps appear right there under the time...date...(and one day) weather conditions...and he/she can use the app again right from the lock screen. Make it a feature for the Pro Max with the larger screen.

That's amazing. I wonder if this means that shortcuts will now be able to operate in the background or multi-task. It's incredibly frustrating to have to sit and wait while a shortcut runs in the foreground (especially one that has a significant wait as part of the workflow), because Apple prohibits them from operating in the background.

Wow I'm actually surprised Apple made this change lol. They're doing a better job listening lately.
Do you think this has to do with Ives departure? At least in this case it seems he wouldn't have liked the idea of custom icons.

Well custom app icons like what widgetsmith is doing was technically possible since Apple released Siri Shortcuts in iOS 12, while Jony was still there

All I want is a simple way to disable app text below each icon. I’m well aware of what each app is!
Same here, no text is already working on the icons located within the dock, let it happen where we want. Then let us arrange icons, and widgets a little bit more freely instead of having them stuck one next to the other ones, then disable that banner ... man I'm getting ahead of myself.

Maybe the banner for Shortcuts could be enabled/disabled in notifications? Maybe?

This is big news. I hope this makes it to Apple Watch OS. I tried a few weeks ago to use shortcuts to create menus for my complications e.g. a single complication that was set to a shortcut that popped up a menu with “Phone” and “Messages” entries so that I could quickly launch 2 apps (or more) from a single complication. It worked perfectly except that when I activated it I first got the Shortcut app asking me if I wanted to run the menu shortcut so it was was less slick than it could have been. Hopefully this change will avoid this and allow me to revisit that idea if it does also make it to WatchOS.

Still 'feels' messy to me.

Any developer can add extra icons to their iOS app for us to choose from.

And let's fact it, most of us just want a black/grey version.

Telegram, Bear, and many others offer built-in alternate icons.

If your app has no alternate icons in 2020 then you look old.

Just like developers who failed to add dark mode, a couple of years back.

(And if you don't have dark mode in 2020, you really are past it).

* Sidenote, don't be like 1Pass and offer two near-identical icons.

Forgot one thing:

If you don't use paragraphs, then you are well beyond past it.

So, so happy for this change. IOS has gotten kinda stale with the same look so I’m glad there starting to give a little more options for customization.

This is way worse than it was before.
The banners are GIGANTIC.
They hang too long.
Obstruct.
I went back to original apps because of this until they let us disable banners entirely.
Imagine having a whole home screen full of custom icons and swapping between apps. The top half of your screen is blocked by a ridiculous banner.

they have to let us disable this nonsense

This is great and all but one has to wonder why Apple didn't just do this in the first place when they introduced icon customization for shortcuts or heck just make it even easier allowing users to change icons at the app level. Also, the banner has to go. Does Apple even do any usability testing at all?

Apple likes to test the waters before they open the floodgates, we had widgets in IOS 4. It just took multiple years for it to reach the Home Screen.

It's such a basic feature though. Like no one at Apple said, "oh hey guys this implementation of icon customization is kind of clunky"?

You can use Icon Themer to get rid of the banner and make it fully seamless. Even works for system apps since iOS 14.3 beta 1.

What I wanted to know! I removed the beta profile, just in case, so I could migrate to 12 Pro Max easily. I will have to redownload now and take advantage of these changes in Icon Themer.

Why not just custom icons then? So that at least we can still have the notification indocator if necessary, and this could then also affect Siri, spotlight, etc...
