Hi,
I've created a custom Fusion Drive with two drives: Samsung SSD 840 Pro and Hitachi HTS545050B9SA0. I checked the CoreStorage with diskutil via command line and found out that this logical volume group is not a Fusion Drive:

caribou:~ martin$ diskutil cs info 3869BD2E-AB5E-4909-B1F1-DE9E04857B48
Core Storage Properties:
Role: Logical Volume Group (LVG)
UUID: 3869BD2E-AB5E-4909-B1F1-DE9E04857B48
LVG Name: FusionDrive
LVG Version: 1
LVG Size: 999011876864 B
LVG Free Space: 8343552 B
LVG Status: Online
LVG Sparse: No
Fusion Drive: No

After that I've created a new LVG via the recovery partition but I'm not able to create a real Fusion Drive. I don't know why...
These were the steps:

diskutil coreStorage create FusionDrive drive0 drive1
diskutil coreStorage createVolume 3869BD2E-AB5E-4909-B1F1-DE9E04857B48 jhfs+ "caribou HD" 100%

diskutil(8) and strictly Fusion or FUSION (not fusion, not FusionDrive …)

A long shot (without spare internal disks, I might be unable to test this) …

With attention to uppercase characters, try recreating the LVG with a more specific name – Fusion or FUSION

Hi,
I've created a custom Fusion Drive with two drives: Samsung SSD 840 Pro and Hitachi HTS545050B9SA0. I checked the CoreStorage with diskutil via command line and found out that this logical volume group is not a Fusion Drive:

caribou:~ martin$ diskutil cs info 3869BD2E-AB5E-4909-B1F1-DE9E04857B48
Core Storage Properties:
Role: Logical Volume Group (LVG)
UUID: 3869BD2E-AB5E-4909-B1F1-DE9E04857B48
LVG Name: FusionDrive
LVG Version: 1
LVG Size: 999011876864 B
LVG Free Space: 8343552 B
LVG Status: Online
LVG Sparse: No
Fusion Drive: No

After that I've created a new LVG via the recovery partition but I'm not able to create a real Fusion Drive. I don't know why...
These were the steps:

diskutil coreStorage create FusionDrive drive0 drive1
diskutil coreStorage createVolume 3869BD2E-AB5E-4909-B1F1-DE9E04857B48 jhfs+ "caribou HD" 100%

I appreciate this thread is slightly old, however this might still be useful to you and others, but I had similar issues that I was able to resolve today.

I've been trying to create a FUSION drive externally (my iMac has an internal one) leveraging a dual USB3 docking enclosure. No matte how I tried to "skin the cat" with the CoreStorage creation, I always got the same LVG Sparse and Fusion Drive equal to No. I tried the capitals for the volume name to be FUSION, on both the VolumeGroup and the Volume, without success.

I was able to succeed in creating a Fusion drive by moving my Hard Disk to a USB2 dock, while leaving my SSD in a USB3 dock. Obviously, USB2 is going to run a lot slower.

After building the Fusion drive in the normal way and using capital FUSION (for luck, maybe), the final diskutil cs info came out as LVG Sparse: Yes and Fusion Drive: Yes.

I've move the Hard Disk back to the USB3 docking enclosure and powered it on, it still says Yes to LVG Sparse and Fusion Drive. A technical result, at least.

So it seems that OS X needs to determine some kind of "performance" difference or a change in the controller type to be able to mark those drives as Fusion drives.

I guess if you're planning to do this as an internal drive and struggle, you could look at borrowing/buying some external USB2 & USB3 caddies.

Now that the drive is identified as a Fusion drive, I need to wait and see if it is going to perform like one.

Hope this provides some steering tips.

Cheers.
