Custom icon in dock larger than the other icons

I have a few Webapps I use for internet radio. I made some Icons for a couple of them (1024x1024 px png) however when I replaced them the icons are larger than the other icons, native in the dock and the finder. I found some instructions mentioning to leave about 20% padding and reduced the size by 50% but they still appear larger. Has anyone heard of this?
