Speaking from experience, the Apple store (B&M) will upgrade RAM and nothing else. You'll have to order online to get the processor bump.

Can you elaborate Tomorrow. Are you saying the retail stores will stock or upgrade the Ram to 4gb? I was under the impression that this was bto only.

I think it's still unsure whether the extra 2GB is soldered or is it an additional chip. My guess is that it's soldered, I can't find any space for an extra module. If it's soldered, then there is no way Apple Store can upgrade the RAM without replacing the logic board.

Some time ago I went to the Apple Store to purchase a MacBook. I wanted a higher-spec model than what they had in stock, so I asked about getting more RAM, a bigger HD, and faster processor.
The sales associate told me that the only upgrades they perform in the store were RAM upgrades. If I wanted a bigger HD or faster processor, I'd have to order online.
But to (hopefully) answer your question, I was specifically told that if I wanted to upgrade only the RAM, they could do it right there in the store.

Oh yes I understand that. However, we are not certain yet (in fact most are pretty confident) that these machines have the ram soldered to the system board. If that is the case, I think ram upgrades are a no-go, as it is not just dumping sims into ram slots.

There is no teardown yet I think. Apple has posted a pic about it though As you can see in the attachment, there are 8 RAM chips (possibly another 8 on the other side). 4GB can be achieved by increasing the density from 256MB to 512MB per chip (512MB is the same as in 4GB modules).

Apple couldn't offer the 4GB version today in Cardiff, UK. Told me the only option was to order online.
Basic Models Only
In Store _ MacBook Air -Just spoke to my local store (Troy MI) and was told they will have basic models only for the near future. Don't have any now, but will for the weekend (10/23)
