I have used the "OLD PHONE" type ringer on my phones for the last few years. I find that when I was using songs I would hear it but it would not always sink in that my phone was ringing.

I must say that I get a LOT of looks when I answer a cell phone with that ring because people are looking around for a regular phone. I was happy to play the downloaded ring tones and found I like the one the iPhone has.

Now if the apple store will just SHIP my phone. :(

What you might like is ThinkGeek's Bluetooth Retro Handset.

someone has found a way to use your own ringtone. I am too afraid to try it lol

Custom Ring Tones

Apple tries to control everything about their products. I suspect they would think that home-brewed ringers would vary greatly in quality/substance - and potentially make non-iphone users think it came with natively junky ringtones.
A better compromise would be to allow tunes - or sections of tunes - to be used.

While I do agree with you about the above, I think Apple could build something in to iTunes to make sure that what ever custom ringtones that the user may put on, that the file would be at the same volume level as the others to ensure that any customized tones wouldn't cause a problem. I personally think that Apple will come out with something within the next few weeks or months.

Now lets look at the other side of the coin, beings that the iPhone is running a stripped down version of OS X (Linux) and how they are starting to become targets of hackers, I guess they are afraid of some "yaa-hoo" coming up with a virus as a ringtone and somehow interfearing with AT&T's network.

I, for one, am glad that one cannot customize the iPhone like you can with the others.

I might like to point out that the file types that are used as ring tones can not be made into virus because of how the file is made and used.

So what is your reasoning behind not allowing the customization because viruses is a poor reason since it can not be done and if it could it would of been done a very long time ago.
