I was able to have a custom tone for messages because of the great advice in the thread above, but when I attempt to do the same, and drop a .caf file into a folder it does't work. I, the administrator, don't have enough clearance to write to that folder nor change privacy of it.

Can anyone think of a work around? Thanks

Are you running El Capitan? If the answer is yes, then you do need to disable SIP or rootless, we often say, before changing message sound to your customize one.

To be more specific, you need to press Cmd + R during starting up process and Mac will start to recovery mode. Then under "Utility" menu item, there should be something similar to "System Protection", I don't remember the exact menu item words though.

Then you should be able to disable rootless, and complete your process modifying "presumably" important system files - in your case, default ringtone.

After completing changing, don't forget to enable rootless again.

PS: Default ringtone is not so critical, I think.
