Id love my iPod to have a Digital radio receiver in it (for those in the UK)...

Regular radio is pretty shocking these days, so I dont really care for that in my iPod

I am spoiled listening to my iPod.
Whenever I do something stupid, like turn on my radio, I am immediately reminded of why I don't listen...

1. Commercials... they never seem to end, I mean how many new/used car commercials can there be! The commercial time is insane.

2. DJs... they absolutely love to hear themselves talk, and so you have the "morning shows" with a ditzy sidekick, etc.

3. Promotions... win $$$$$ by playing this or that game, call in and you could be the one to say "what's your favorite radio station?? Why WXYZ of course!"

On and on it goes...

I usually turn it off before I actually get to hear a song

I cannot even add to that!

the only time I listen to the radio, is when I am near the University of Minnesota, and I can listen to 770 Radio K, a station that is run by college students, and plays anything but "mainstream" music. I listen to that station for new ideas, and to hear what is going on in the local music scene.

otherwise, the stations I can get in my suburbs, are less then pleasant.

I sent a comment asking for three things -

1. No iPod with radio. ever.
2. iPod nano selection in the "which ipod do you have" box
3. iTunes 5 selection in the "what music software do you use?" box

I see some of your points with XM radio, but (a) it's another waste of space, and (b) it's pretty much USA/Canada only - why put in circutry for something that's not going to work in the rest of the world?

I guess people missed where I pointed out the FMXtra. Version 2 is supposed to be even better. They're like $20. You want one, go buy one. They're just as good as the built in ones on other players. That is to say, not so good. But they exist.

A readout or gauge or SOMETHING would help this product. I bought it, and have to listen for a few minutes to see where I am on the dial so that I can FIND the radio station I'm looking for! Granted, I listen mostly for news and weather reports, but I'd like to be able to jump between that station and another station (and back) without a lot of guesswork.

Of the 5% of users that want a radio in their 'Pod, it seems that 90+% want it for hearing the TV audio broadcast in the gym.

Maybe I'm being dense, but why would you take a $100+ device to the gym for listening to a radio broadcast?

Simple. I spend about 1 hr lifting weights and then 30 - 45 minutes on the cardio gear. I listen to music while lifting, then I watch TV in the cardio room. It would be nice if I could use my iPod for that. For now I use an iRiver unit that I have a waterproof case for, but it only has 1GB of flash and a bad interface. I'd love to be able to use my iPod at the gym, but the TV helps those cardio miles fly by...

It seems most of you don't want a radio becuase the stations you get are rubbish - filled with too many adverts and not enough good content.

I could say the same about American/Spanish/Greek/Italian/French TV too.

Luckily, in the UK we get good radio stations, and good TV channels (with no adverts!) and I would certainly like to suggest that people in places with similar high quality broadcasts are much more likely to want a radio in an iPod.

I don't want to have to use a 3rd party device (ugly, bulky etc).

It would NOT detract from the iPod being a music player! Think about it .. does having a radio in a car make it less of a car? Does having a cd player/mp3 player in a car mean that nobody would want to listen to the radio?

I think "Most" of us are used to picking the music we want to listen to. Heck, I still don't like XM or Serius satellite radio for the same reason. Sure there are lots of stations that play some songs I like, but Even though I like electronic music, doesn't mean I like all electronic music.

I could not agree more. The only radio I listen to these days is the "Top 40" stations and the only reason I do that is so I can keep up with what's current and not look like an "Old Fogey" to my kids. Between that and the discovery downloads on iTMS I have actually gotten turned on to some cool new music.

..so you can get live sport, news and traffic news via the iTunes store? No.

I could care less about those 3 WHEN listening to my iPod. The only time I do care about those, are shortly before I go to work, or when i am at work.

In those cases I have a radio available if I need it.

Anyway,
I have a radio with me most of the time and I am not against "radio" as a whole, I am FCC licensed after all ;)

So how does the video function on the 'pure music' iPod make you all feel now about a radio?

Is anyone complaining about video? Does this make it less of an iPod now? Does it use up precious hardware/software space?

Ha! Touché! Obviously the iPod is now an inferior music player ;)

This is my first post today, and I assume the video iPod has come out (which would explain why I couldn't log on to MR earlier). Without having seen it *at all* I can't see it as something I would want... just because I don't feel like staring at a small screen much - but let's have a look first!
