Can you change the default size of the widths of the columns when you open Finder in Column View?

I'm getting tired of grabbing the drag-bars and adjusting every time just so I can read the truncated text in sub-folders.

Thanx!

With Snow Leopard its very easy... Just hold down the Alt Key and use your mouse to set the column width. Finder will then remember this as the default setting.

This works for Finder, but how about in applications? For instance, I can set the width of the left column (shortcuts, network, etc.) in Finder using Alt, but when I go to open a file via Illustrator, the first column is so narrow I can't read any items in full. And then, the file columns are narrow and never remember to open wide enough to show the file names. Can this be fixed?
