SFTP is basically encrypted FTP. The server comes with openssh so it is on every OS X machine. You can turn it on or off with the "Remote Login" checkbox under the sharing preferences. One advantage of SFTP besides being secure is that it can compress the file before it sends it, so if one is on a low bandwidth connection it should take less time.
