I received my reply today and I was confirmed by CP that these units will not wake up your Mac, but was also assured that while in sleep, the UPS should run for several hours. He believed in fact, that an iMac would be able to run for possibly 24 hours , but during my test, as I mentioned earlier, my unit read approximately 170 minutes of run time which is almost 3 hours long. But I didn't mention that this number also fluctuated a lot. So really, unless someone does a real world test, it could be difficult to gauge a realistic time frame.

Even so, i still agree with you Bacan. I still love this UPS and I personally don't experience power outages lasting for several hours long in my area, if any at all, so the sleeping issue isn't a deal breaker for me.

But let us know your response from APC. It'll be curious to know if their units behave similarly with Macs.

APC simply referred me to this response on their website (see the second paragraph) which indicates that certain computers do not wake up from sleep when the UPS goes on battery and in this case they advise their customers not to use sleep mode.

It's very rare that I get power failures here. I'm not too concerned, but when they do happen it's often pretty serious (e.g. flooding/fire at a transformer station) and it can take a few hours to restore power. It would be great if a sleeping iMac could survive on the battery for more than a few hours -- we'll have to see about that!

Other than energy savings, is there any advantage to be gained by using sleep mode as opposed to powering off the display and putting the hard disk to sleep?
