Cycles on a battery

I have a Macbook pro 15 inch early 2013, and its still wonderful (2.7Ghz, 512SSD) Works like a charm. ok except the mic doesn't work for some reason lol

im pretty sure its the original battery. CoconutBattery tells me
Cycles = 1220 (i knowApple say 1000 cycles should be 80%of original charge)
Full charge Capacity is 4732mAh (was 8460mAh when new)


I wondered two things.
1. How many cycles has your older 15 inch Macbook pro had?

2. How much more degraded will my battery get before it totally stops my Macbook from starting up ok?


I get anywhere from 30 mins to 2 hours on battery with my usage now, which is ok (either photoshop, bridge Chrome etc, or just emailing and writing docs)

Im sure some people have more cycles than me?

Apple says the lifespan on a MBP battery is 1,000 cycle. So you are passed expected life.

Make sure you are not seeing any bulging from the battery packs. Looks at the device from the sides. Also ensure the feet sit flat. Pack swelling indicates build of gases due to shorting in the pack and can cause connections to fail, so it could be by your mic quit working.

Definitely no bulging, and the mics not worked for a couple of years. It might be a driver thing or a hardware thing, not really sure.
I know Apple store will replace the battery for £129 (UK). Ive watched a vid on my model replacement and its a total strip down. So pretty intensive job. With a battery costing £70 ish, the Apple store sounds like a good deal.

Usually Apple in the US replaces the top case as a unit for the same money. This is the battery, keyboard, trackpad, and Al housing where your hands rest. They are glued together on retina and later MacBook Pros.

Removing the battery is not difficult if you take your time. I just did it for the first time on a 2014 13" Pro and it went smoothly.

I think an early 2013 15inch is a nightmare, everything has to be removed inside, so the video showed.
And ive found out this week that my mac is classed as Vintage, and Apple wont replace the battery anymore. Planned obsolescence is just wrong, save landfill and help use fix these things.

The iFixit guide wanted me to remove everything too but I used the "string" method and all I had to do was disconnect the battery, remove the battery screws, use the string to slice through the adhesive, and remove the battery. Looks like the same method might work with the early 2013 15".
