From Saurik himself in the reddit thread:
The reality is that I wanted to just shut down the Cydia Store entirely before the end of the year, and was considering moving the timetable up after receiving the report (to this weekend); this service loses me money and is not something I have any passion to maintain: it was a critical component of a healthy ecosystem, and for a while it helped fund a small staff of people to maintain the ecosystem, but it came at great cost to my sanity and led lots of people to irrationally hate me due to what amounted to a purposeful misunderstanding of how profit vs. revenue works. (That said, shutting this down doesn't actually mitigate the majority of my costs right now, which involve many terabytes of bandwidth per month continuing to be spent on hosting the archived repositories I took on as my responsibility; I am thankfully currently making enough money from my new job to cover these costs.)

R.I.P. Cydia :(

I believe it's only the BigBoss store that's shut down. The others are still alive and selling. Unfortunately, I no longer have a JB phone so cannot confirm.

WTF. He should elaborate on how much leaving the server online costs. With reduced bandwidth (he could just switch to a cheaper package with lower speed), it can't be THAT much. It'd be really bad to have to locally save all my prev. purchases, particularly because for example iFiles uses the Cydia to authenticate valid licenses.

My understanding is just that it's Cydia's systems. I.e, Paypal connected to Cydia. But a lot of times tweak devs have alternate payment systems. Those are not shut down.

It's not Cydia itself.

It's the payment system that integrates with PayPal.

From the first article you linked…

To be clear, Cydia itself will still be around, however, the backend for payments (on the main repositories) will no longer be in service. You will still be able to download past purchases and make purchases on third-party repositories.

See? Cydia is up.

Honestly, I don't even miss jailbreaking anymore. I have two SEs on iOS 11 that are jailbroken and they're just sitting in a drawer unused for at least 8 months. I got a XS Max on 12.0.1 last night and immediately updated it to the latest.

Jailbreaking used to be fun about five years ago but I don't need it with today's phones.

Lots of people who share this opinion I find were not missing much from Apple to begin with.

However, I am still missing quite a few things. Apple still does not allow you to grow or shrink icons, move them around where YOU want them, or allow you to increase or decrease how many you want on the screen at once.

I still can't make a call from the lockscreen, or start a new text. I can't get weather animations and smart-invert and night shift are not Eclipse and f.lux.

I could go on and on as I have over 200 tweaks installed to fix what I don't like about iOS, but that would end up being a screed.

Did I mention tethering?

Anyway, that's great for you. I will keep jailbreaking though, as long as I'm using an iPhone because I still have over 200 reasons to do so.

The only things I now want from a JB are Consolidation, task bar icons and Activator. Other than that, I'm content.
