What is this patch really supposed to do and why is it helpful or needed?

It blocks the exploit in iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1 (the one that allows jailbreak.me to work) The exploit would also allow any malicious hacker to access your iphone via a pdf on Internet.

You should install it after you are jailbroken to close the hole.

Actually the exploit is present in all firmwares :p One of the reasons Saurik wrote it is because of Apple's (ridiculous) decision not to release an update for the first iPhone/iPod Touch to fix the exploit.

Ok so, this is avoiding 4.0.2 right? I was a bit understooding it. I run that same pic you showed on ip4s?

What are you asking.

Avoid 4.0.2 if you want to jailbreak, if you upgrade on anything but 3G you will lose jailbreak and the ability to re-jailbreak.

Apply the patch after you are jailbroken. It will stop any malicious attacks on your phone.

Any chance we'll see something like this that doesn't need mobilesubstrate?

I uninstalled everything using mobilesubstrate after I noticed a significant decrease in battery life. My phone runs much better now.

I was only running sbsettings and quickreply FYI.

Comix (jailbreakme.com) have released the source codes for their pdf hack that they use to gain access to your device during the jailbreak process. If you upgrade to iOS 4.0.2, Apple closes this hole, but you'll lose your jailbreak. However if you get the patch, it will make your iPod/iPhone no longer vulnerable to malicious code. Definitely needed if you don't want someone to hack into all your information, emails, logon details etc. from your iDevice.

Find it amusing that Cydia can fix it with a 5k fix and Apple take a 579 MB firmware update.

What's even more amusing is the jailbroken iPad is more secure than the vanilla iPad. My iPad is jailbroken and probably already blows away anything iOS 4 will bring. Already have multitasking, Flash, virtual memory, file system access, the list goes on and on. I'm in iPad heaven already. iOS 4 is probably gonna be a big letdown for those who jailbreak.

Just donated 30$ to the Wizard... err I mean Saurik. Not only does he provide the framework around the JB he goes beyond call of duty in every area

I am on 4.2.1 is this still needed to be applied? Or has it been fixed by apple at source in the FW?
