You know what stinks someone will ruin it with something like installous. The only thing is I cant justify paying for a jailborken app its not that i dont want to pay I just dont want to lose it if an update prevents it from working and im out maybe 10-20 bucks. Im going to stick with free apps hope winterboard stays free!

i think in comparison to apple's app store...

that cydia and installer don't come close to comparison.

i think if they had a re write to function close to installous - that their revenue would greatly increase!

I don't think they are trying to duplicate the apps store approach.

I think they are just trying to improve the portal in which users can purchase programs either not approved by apple or do not meet apples criteria but provide a meaningful function.

If people decide to start charging for the theming and add-ons I am ok with that. I will just be that more discriminant with my purchases. Nothing wrong with someone wanting to be compensated for their time and skill.

I don't think it's wrong that he's finally trying to re-coup something for his years of hard work, constantly being annoyed by people demanding updates and late nights of programming to get something up and running for people.

of course I'm not going to pay for it, cause I'm pretty broke, but I can understand.

I feel Saurik sold out. He should have just gone and worked for Apple.

Think about what you're saying.

How did Saurik sell out? He's not the one who is going to be setting prices for most of the apps sold here. It's going to be up to the developer, just like it is with the App store. Saurik is only making it easier for the buyers and sellers of these apps by providing an official store in which to buy/sell.

I don't mind paying for apps that will add functionality for the iphone. Apps that the Appstore will never allow.
Like Swirly, Snapture, irealsms etc

but know I noticed the first app that showed up at the Cydia store was a ..I'm sorry to say this. An stupid and exact copy of another app at the App store...

If they are seriously going to go this way, I am not going to support it and nobody should...because I'm thinking once they go the easy route, pretty soon we'll be charged for themes and background pictures...

Saurik himself said in the description of that first app that he wasn't normally going to charge for small semi-useless apps like Cyntacts.

But couldn't he line up a better app to kick-start the Cydia store? Surely with all the talent among the JB developing community, there're lots of apps with functionality not offered by the Apple-approved apps that people are willing to pay for? And apparently Cyntacts is still the only app for sale through the Cydia store. I find myself questioning why Saurik "opened" the store if he didn't have developers already lined up to sell their apps through it.

I agree 100%. There should have been more available for the opening of the store. There even may be and they (Saurik and whoever is helping him with this project) just haven't gotten around to adding them to the list.

I don't think Saurik is an evil moneygrubber like the Apple corporation. Not even a bit. But the fact remains that no matter how small they may be, there's dollar signs in everybody's eyes. He's using the opening of this store as an opportunity to make some money. Sure, he's only selling a 99 cent app. But think of the support he's going to get from his followers that have been using his stuff for free for the past however many years. I mean people have been donating money for the work he's already done. I think it's fair that he charge a little for the premier app.

I agree and this is the main thing that's making me worried about the Cydia Store.
How do we go about getting support and a refund when some JB app completely lags our phone or hammers the battery life? I find that the Appstore has a sense of professionalism that is missing on the JB scene (and for good reason, its a dev scene).
A huge good point, I agree. This will highlight what Apple is/was "trying" to do with the strict SDK and AppStore requirements.

this is sweet news indeed. i hope they stay safe and away from apple's legal hounds and enjoy success. go cydia!

I'll just weigh in to the Cydia store with something that I posted on a different forum:

People who are saying that Saurik is likely to get sued by Apple are pretty ignorant; for one, experts in DMCA laws from Berkeley, Michigan, etc. have chimed in on the issue and have said that Jay Freeman would have a pretty "good defense" when it comes to the issue of the legality of the Cydia store, primarily because Apple would rely on copyright infringement laws, which cannot be used to justify unfair competition/monopolies on certain services. Two, Apple would really not have anything to gain from suing, simply because they would be doing so in order to prevent profit-making from another party who is offering services that Apple themselves would probably not have allowed in their own store in the first place. So, why would somebody sue Freeman for selling products/features that Apple wouldn't have been selling anyways?

Also, I really don't think this will cripple the amount of free Cydia apps that we get now, simply because many companies that offer commercial products already have established ways of charging for their apps. On the other hand, this sort of thing could also breed a tremendous amount of competition within the Jailbreaking development community to come out with similar products and perhaps offer the best ones for a small price, meaning WE win out when we are offered new apps/features that have been thoroughly tested, even if it means paying a small price.

The last thing I want to mention is, no matter what comes out on the store, pretty much everything will be reliant upon the end-user, YOU. If anything you buy violates the terms of the contract you have with your wireless carrier, or even Apple, you would ultimately be paying for whatever consequences may come of them, and not the company that distributes those apps. You're also at risk of making sure you read license agreements just in case some apps end up charging for updates, or if future firmware updates break certain apps. Just a heads up.

I am actually really looking forward to what the Cydia store will bring in the months to come...just think that if we now have turn-by-turn navigation, tethering, video recorders, themes, the possibilities are endless now that developers have a serious way of bringing their product to the jailbroken community.

I don't think Saurik is an evil moneygrubber like the Apple corporation.

That's your opinion and your welcome to it. As others that differ are welcome to theirs.

Anyway it looks like Cyntacts has already been cracked and is now available for free........is their no honour amongst JBer's;)

You know, this is what I wonder about as well. Before, it was one thing. So people jailbreak and can add mostly free stuff and better functionality to their phones. Apple does not really loose out on any money. People still buy the phones. But now there is an alternative "App store." That will hit Apple revenue. All I have to say is watch out Cydia, cause here they come.:(

Haha.. If the app store never would have hosted the app, I fail to see how apple would be able to claim any lost revenue. It's not like we'll see current app store apps suddenly appear on cydia.

Any lost revenue is from their own design by choosing to prohibit apps.

It also occurs to me that as far as I know, Apple hasn't gone after any of the people who offer jailbreaking/unlocking services for a fee. So why would it react differently to the Cydia store?

Does anyone know after buying an app from the Cydia Store and a restore or OS update is done, what happens to the bought app? is it automatically re-installed next time you open up Cydia or is it gone for good and has to be re-bought?

Thanks..:)

Just tried it, love it! A great improvement to Cydia in general...

Scooterpig, I think there are tools that allow you to back up ur stuff beforehand, I have Packager installed but never had to use it...it says it will do, and even twitter you after u do it:)

I just want to say I just bought CatagoriesSB from Saurik's new improved Cydia, and it was a no-brainer to pay 99cents to improve an already good app. I think what Cydia has over iTunes is that Cydia has just what you might need, and iTunes has most everything you don't.
