well after, i installed that last night because my roommate suggested i had a virus.

i have installed new ram

Sorry, but your response is kind of confusing.

The kernel panics started before or after Avast was installed?

The kernel panics started before or after you upgraded RAM?

If the answer to both is before, then I would start thinking about any programs/widgets/etc that were installed just prior to the panics starting. Start removing them and see if there is any improvement.

You could also try Disk Utility->Repair Disk Permissions.

sorry i was in a rush to reply. the crashes started to happen about two months after i installed my new ram. the ram was installed about five months ago but i rarely had a crash. over the past two weeks is when my computer started to crash daily. my friend suggested that my problem may be a virus so he suggested downloading avast. i downloaded avast last night but i was not able to run a scan because my computer would crash.

should i reinstall my old ram?

my friend suggested that my problem may be a virus so he suggested downloading avast.
Your friend is uninformed. It can't be a virus, since no Mac OS X viruses exist. You don't need any 3rd party antivirus app to keep your Mac malware-free. Macs are not immune to malware, but no true viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any since it was released over 10 years ago. You cannot infect your Mac simply by visiting a website, unzipping a file, opening an email attachment or joining a network. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X is a handful of trojans, which cannot infect your Mac unless you actively install them, and they can be easily avoided with some basic education, common sense and care in what software you install. Also, Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion have anti-malware protection built in, further reducing the need for 3rd party antivirus apps.

should i reinstall my old ram?
Yes, install your old RAM and see if the kernel panics stop. If they do, it indicates your new RAM may be faulty.
