computer: mac mini (late 2014)
os: os x el capitan (version 10.11.6)
itunes version: 12.6

iTunes doesn’t currently work on my desktop computer.
After clicking onto the iTunes .app icon, the entire menu along the top of the computer screen fades to a dark grey color, and that’s all that happens, the actual software doesn’t open. The iTunes software itself may be corrupted or damaged, and deleting iTunes from the Applications folder doesn’t seem possible because it’s part of the system files of the computer. When iTunes version 12.6 is re-installed over top of the damaged version, that doesn’t fix the problem.

Thanks for any tips on how to make iTunes work again.

IIRC, Terminal works to delete iTunes app: ~rm /Applications/iTunes.app
That should permit a complete reinstall, although you might want to remove prefs files first.
