I dropped my Mac Book and broke the screen. More importantly it has also damaged the hard drive. I took it to a repairers who could not read it. And yes of course I am one of those idiots who keep everything on it but does not back it up. So some questions:

How screwed am I?
Are these data retrieval companys you see advertised any good?
Which is the best one in the UK?
And how much will it cost?

Many thanks,

Nigel.

Data retrieval usually runs a minimum of $1000 us per disk and doesn't always work at all.

Have you tried putting it in an external enclosure to see if even gets recognized?

Download Ubuntu Linux, burn to CD and boot from that. Great OS, and works wonders with dead drives!
