- To those who keep a second one as a future spare, how do you feel about the battery? Could it potentially knacker by not being used for such a long time?

- How about other manufacturers like Fiio, iBasso and the like? Is anyone tempted by them?

the one in my car is in an Apple sock

Well, at least its feet won't get cold at any point soon.

SSD prices have come down enough that an affordable 256gb Touch is feasible. Plus, with the new lossless file types, Apple needs to do something to keep up with players like Pono. They can't get the parts for the Classic anymore, so making a Touch with a big ssd would make sense. They could even keep it the same small form factor and processor. As long as it plays music, I'm happy.

I like my 64gb Touch 5g, but I am about out of space and would like to re-rip some of my collection at a higher rate. I don't even bother putting videos on it as I know that would kill my available space.

There shouldn't be a concern about them breaking or the battery dying because Apple is required to support them for at least 7 years in CA after they discontinued them. I just got my 2009 classic replaced for a broken dock connector at the Apple store.

This time last year I bought an iPod classic 120gb for £70 (traded some old games and phones in so didn't actually spend any money). Found I missed the iPod touch features and only used around 20gb so decided to trade it in and put it towards a touch 5th gen.

Took it back to the same shop and they bought it back off me for £100 so they shop basically paid me £30 to keep an iPod classic for a year.

The guy behind the counter said the price of them was shooting up. Wish I'd have kept hold of it now.

Not too sure about that. The guy who served me when I traded mine in said his 120gb Classic broke. He took it to the apple shop in Liverpool only to be told sorry we can't repair it and we have no replacements.

Apple will never release an affordable anything. They charge £80 to upgrade from 16gb to 64gb and when you take into account I can buy a 64gb micro SD for less than half that it shows exactly how much Apple rip off the customers when it comes to memory. You pay £80 for something that will have cost them less than £5-£10.

If they ever released a 256gb iPod touch you would pay through the nose for it. They charge £250 for 64gb. You'd be looking at another £100 if they went up to £256gb. And £300+ for an MP3 player is absolutely outrageous.

That's if they even bother to upgrade the touch. I'm sure they'd rather push people towards the £700+ 128gb iPhone.

Don't get me wrong I love Apple products. I have an iPod, iPhone and iPad but it can be denied that Apple rip its customers off when it comes to hard drive space.

The 160 GB issue

Does anybody know if Apple is intending to replace the Classic with something that will have a similar storage capacity? 128 GB iPad doesn't have enough storage.

My wifes Classic has started playing up after 3 months, skipping tracks, not playing at all or only playing in album sequence. She did buy it last June but never got it out of the box until November last year.

gave up with shop and got hold of Apple by phone. Said it sounds like a hard drive failure and are collecting it for repair.

Not holding my breath with this one

Damn, I wish I stocked up on iPod Classics

Why would you not be holding your breath? It's in the warranty period and they will just replace the unit with a refurb. They still have stocks to cover warranty repairs and are still advertising the sale of out of warranty replacement units on their website.

I picked up a faulty 160gb model a month ago real cheap. It's got hard drive issues. Walked into an authorised rep (not an Apple store) today and handed over the unit and $159 Australian and they've placed an order for an out of warranty replacement. For a total of $200 Australian (about $150 US) I will soon have an as new boxed 160gb Classic. They gave me no indication that there was a shortage of replacement units.

We phoned Apple care, the lady could not even raise a case for the repair as the Classic did not show up on her system. She had to raise a special case report to get it looked at. I expect we will just get a replacement unit but in the meantime we wait .....

The shops are not interested ... thats my experience:(

Can't even find the classic in their system now. That's terrible. Hopefully you get a good outcome mate.

Just to update. Two days after taking it in and paying $159 Australian for an out of warranty replacement I picked up my replacement unit. No retail packaging, just a perfect plastic wrapped iPod and a 90 day warranty. I have another 80gig iPod so I think I'll put this one away for a bit.

Well, yesterday, I am delighted to report that I finally took delivery of an iPod classic that had been specially ordered - with some difficulty - and put aside for me when the announcement that the device was to be discontinued was made.

"They're like gold dust now - they're impossible to get, and on ebay they are selling for insane prices," I was informed by the chap who sold it to me.
