Ok. So I get 9to5Mac emails every day. Their website seems to be extremely pro-Apple. However, I received one of their emails yesterday and it linked to an article from The Verge about about a very troubling aspect of Apple retail and customer service. Link below.

It is terrible to say the least. I think you should all read it and ask yourselves what’s more important… treating lower-level employees humanely or sacrificing their well-being for Apple’s bottom line.

Also, this type of article, which MacRumors absolutely knows about but won’t report on, confirms to me that MacRumors is basically an Apple salesperson. Whitewash most topics and enjoy their ad revenue.

Way to just make a blanket statement.

It’s an interesting article but The Verge has been on a recent anti-Apple campaign.

It’s an interesting article but The Verge has been on a recent anti-Apple campaign.

Is it an anti-Apple campaign or a pro-truth campaign? The article is just basic truth. It’s not a witch hunt. The article clearly outlines not only the disconnect between corporate and the men and women on the ground, but also the clear disregard corporate has for those lower-level employees.

So what is the collective response you’re looking for? We all know that Nike uses slave labor in China to make their goods and we continue to buy. Nothing will change.

That’s a mighty long article that could have been written about most low level employees at every corporation.
I don’t think anyone really thinks anymore that working at Apple retail would be a very good job.

i always chatted with many store employees from 2006 to 2011 and console them on their thankless job.
this was before the iPhone RAGE and defected MacBooks in the mid 2010's.
The article did depict a store manager who like always promoted favorites and tarnish enemies
which could have and always happens in North America.

its always easier to find disgruntled employees or angry customers.

But the vast majority don't really care, and the ones that had excellent experiences don't really give feedback or reviews.

It's a sad story, it really is. But the employees and depressed guy had/have choices.

The article states “Wasn’t the company supposed to enrich the lives of its employees? To give more than it took?”

The answer is no, jobs are an exchange or work or benefits for deliverables. Any company that does nice things for employees for benefits is in exchange for loyalty, employee wellness, productivity or retention.

All retail, call centre, fast food jobs for large companies are low level and difficult. It doesn’t matter the company, they’ll only paid more than what the next company will be willing to pay.

Companies have slogans that are just B.S.

This Verge article is also Bull.

All those employees can find other jobs. stop complaining. They have the choice to leave. If you don't leave, don't complain, because staying is obviously worth it for them. Simple as that.

This is an Apple forum. Not Nike. Tim Cook goes above and beyond to make his company seem like an absolute gift to all humanity. Apple exists for the betterment of all mankind, is planet-friendly, etc.

If he didn’t tout all these things, maybe we would simply think of Apple as just another corporation that cares about its bottom line, executive enrichment, whatever.

Their very strong message does not match their weak actions regarding even their own people.

And you’re correct, most likely nothing will change. But you can still throw shade at those who deserve it.

Speak for yourself. I haven't purchased anything Nike in decades, and a large part of that is because of their ethics (or rather, lack of ethics). There are plenty of brands I know to avoid for ethical reasons (Nestle is another big example).

I've thought that Apple retail stores have lost a lot of their luster over the past several years, and this article just confirms that hunch. I'm not going to stop buying Apple, but this take the brand down a notch in my view.

Plus, unlikely Nike's slave labor in China, this is happening to our fellow countrymen. We should be supportive, not dismissive.

From what is written in the article, it seems like we could start by simply not being jerks to apple retail and customer support staff.

Anytime I get frustrated with a customer service rep of any company, I always tell them I know it’s not their fault. I know they are bound by rules and they’re just doing what they can. It doesn’t mean I don’t get angry, but I assure them that I understand they are bound by company procedures. I remain courteous.

Other customers just go full blitzkrieg because they don’t seem to have empathy. Those who can’t imagine walking in another’s shoes need to go back to square one.

Perhaps you shouldn't have believed their PR. It's always been a corporation that cared about the bottom line. It's not a charity and they don't actually "care". They say they do for marketing purposes. That's it.

It’s always cute seeing people come to realize that corporations do not give a hoot about their lives

You are and will always be a number to them
Don’t get me started on these fan boys that believe they are part of something bigger

Bruh corporations exist only to use people and make money
Find fulfillment and happiness outside work
They will literally replace your shift with a snap of a finger
Loyalty is ********* to them

Poorly written article filled with lots of projections, assumptions and innuendos meant to lead the reader down a specific emotional path.

If I am seeking the truth on a subject like Apple work conditions etc., I would not try and create a solid founration using that article. It doesn’t pass muster.

Stating that they can always leave isn’t completely true. Sometimes there aren’t any other jobs to goto. Or at least goto fast enough. When bills are due, they are due. When your kids are hungry. They don’t wait until you find another job. And I’ve been in a position before where I work too many hours to even think about finding a different job. I’m so tired and worn out from work that I have to sleep. Instead of find a new job.

This is true. The problem is that Apple goes above and beyond to make themselves seem holy to the world, if you will.

Let’s say another large corporation operates the same way as Apple regarding basic corporate goals and standards. Most of them don’t put on a facade of absolute good will, changing the world for the better, etc.

Apple and Tim Cook do not practice what they preach.

Google had that motto "don't be evil". Kind of like a used car salesman putting "honest" in front of their name. If you have to say it, you aren't it. Apple is more than happy to be the face on the giant wall from their own 1984 commercial, not that they're a major concern. Their adversary is the woman with the hammer. Same as it always was. "Truth to power" has a different meaning when you are the power.
