Thanks for your clarification. Makes it a whole lot easier to understand why he's doing this.

The red iceberg project reminds me the grand public art of the Bulgarian-born artist named Cristo.

He placed 1,340 blue umbrellas in Japan's rice fields and 1,760 yellow umbrellas onto the sides of a California mountain range.
And he wrapped the Reichstag building in Berlin in silver fabric!

damn, you beat me to it. I think he's doing something in NYC currently...

first of all, i was thinking the EXACT same thing. and many of you may not know this, but I am an art major. yes. art. and the topic at hand not only qualifies as art, i think its a darn good project. art is about message. his message is that we should decorate nature, that it is ours, and we should mold it to suit our desires. now, i don't necessarily agree with his message (and really dont' like his previously stated work) but when you look at it, there is something beautiful about the contrast between the red iceburg and the natural surroundings.

I still think it is mediocre as art. It seems very derivative.

we have to ask, though, what is the work?

is the work of art the process he had to go through to dye it? the reaction of the local population? the single photograph? it's effects on nature? I don't know.

The true "work of art" is coming later. The guy's going to print up all the web comments on his work and stick them to the iceberg. It's a comment on the perceived solidity of our ideas and how, ultimately, they deteriorate (i.e., melt into pieces) as they drift.

Much like these threads.
