Dark Matter: A Promising Premise Lost in Space

Dark Matter has all the ingredients for a great show: a high-concept premise based on a best-selling novel, a stellar cast led by Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, and a story that explores identity and the choices we make.

However, the execution falls short in a few key areas. Here's a breakdown:

The Good:
  • Intriguing Concept: The show's central mystery of a physicist who wakes up in a parallel universe where his life is completely different is undeniably captivating.
  • Strong Performances: Edgerton delivers a compelling performance as the desperate protagonist, and the supporting cast does well portraying the alternate versions of the characters.
  • Emotional Core: At its heart, Dark Matter is a story about family and the lengths we'd go to protect them. This emotional core resonates and keeps viewers invested.
The Not-So-Good:
  • Slow Pacing: The show takes a while to get going, with a lot of exposition needed to establish the multiversal world. This can feel tedious for viewers expecting a fast-paced sci-fi adventure.
  • Pacing Issues: Even after the initial set-up, the plot can meander at times. Some plot points feel repetitive, and the show might have benefited from being condensed.
  • Familiarity: The multiverse concept has been explored in many shows and movies before. While Dark Matter adds its own spin, it doesn't feel entirely fresh.
Overall:

Dark Matter is a show with a lot of potential, but it doesn't quite live up to the hype. Fans of sci-fi thrillers with strong central performances might enjoy it, but those looking for something groundbreaking or fast-paced might be disappointed.

Recommendation: If you're curious about the premise and enjoy Joel Edgerton's work, Dark Matter is worth a shot. However, be prepared for a slow burn and a story that borrows from familiar territory.

Personally I feel it is one of the better series on Apple TV+. I have enjoyed all the episodes so far and am thoroughly invested to see where things go as the season progresses. I don't find it slow paced either. It takes time to build up a back story and give progress to each of the characters and the plot. These types of series are meant to be more like a novel and not like the fast pace of a short story.

Just started to watch this - it has potential!
I love (mostly) everything about how higher/different dimensions/realities can play out and change on the lower/ordinary dimensions.

Just watched Episode 8 "Jupiter" and I will just say WOW, not a dull moment in this one. Hopefully the season finale is just as good and intense as this one.
Not yet seen the penultimate episode. Excited!!

The series is one of the best Apple TV+ series to date. If you don't comprehend the plot that is fine, but saying it is "OK" is an ignorant judgment of the show.
I did not mean it like that.. it's actually rather good. I'm enjoying it and have seen every episode, but have not yet seen the very latest that's released today to AppleTV+

And I can't believe you don't believe I understand the plot; It's about a guy who accidentally activated a beacon device that in turn contacted aliens to then come attack humans.

Watched the second last episode of the season. Was really good. Waiting to see what happens in the season finale next week! Hope the original Jason1 wins and gets his life back.

I decided to watch it two weekends ago thinking, for whatever reason, that the series was done so I could binge it all and I thought it was great! I wish I would’ve waited a few more weeks because there were 3 episodes left. I’ve been watching the remaining new ones as they’ve been released which gives me something to look forward to on Wednesday with the final episode coming up next Wednesday. I’m not sure if it’ll be the series finale or the season finale but no matter how it ends or whether it comes back or not at this point it was, IMO, very well done and definitely a series worth binging if you haven’t started watching it yet.

There isn’t a whole lot I like on TV these days but IMO this one is up there and it makes me want to watch more Apple TV+ series I’ve thought looked intriguing over the last few years but have passed on for whatever reason.

Depending on how the next episode turns out I’d be down for another season. I know it’s a limited series which likely means this season is it but so far so good. I do like the idea of a limited series because too many shows eventually go off the rails after a couple of good seasons and seem to run out of reasons to exist but I’d certainly be down for another season of this show given the quality so far so long as they call it quits before it goes downhill.

Loved the ending.
Obviously they set it up for the possibility of more with Ryan finding Amanda.

Let me ask a spoiler-free question for a spoiler-free answer: Does it end in a cliffhanger? You can reply inside a spoiler box just in case someone considers that a spoiler.

I hate it when series finish the season finale with a huge cliffhanger and you keep wondering about the next season which won’t come until months or, in shows like severance, years.

IMO The main storyline being told in the first season is more or less wrapped up. There are some questions left unanswered naturally, but the conflict for the main character and his family is concluded in a way that it is a satisfying end. They did add some things at the end as a tease of where future seasons could go if it was turned into a full series, but the show ends where the source content (book) ends and all indications are that the show was only ever meant to be a limited series.

Many thanks!
I’m definitely going to watch it!

Started this show recently, only the last episode left to watch tonight. On the whole I've enjoyed it but found the middle dipped a bit and I almost gave up on it but episode 8 was very good and looking forward to the finale
