If I do not have dashboard open, are the widgets still on? therefore taking up ram? if this is right, I would like the widgets to be on only when I go into dashboard... can someone clarify that for me please...

If dashboard is not open are the widgets still taking up ram?

Yes they are on.
Yes they are wasting RAM.
Yes they are eating CPU cyles (somewhat).

You cannot do what you want to do.

The only thing you CAN do is quit all the widgets that you don't need constantly to thereby minimize the amount of wasted resources.

You can disable all widgits and totally kill them in the Terminal

I forget the command, it's in a thread on here somewhere, search....

After a bit more research, if you don't ever click on the Dashboard icon in your Dock, then widgets never load.

Don't believe me?

Logout and log back in.. check your Activty Monitor. No Widgets. Now click on the Dashboard icon (or do the keyboard shortcut) and see how long it takes to load the initial widgets? That's all of them loading for the first time. Now check your Activity Monitor.
