Data Broker Hack Exposes Location Info From Millions of iPhone Users

I realize this post is a year old but we pay a premium for Apple devices thinking our data is safe and these third party developers just sell our location anyway. I got super freaked out last month when a targeted ad perfectly matched a random store I walked past while my phone was in my pocket. Knowing my daily life is basically public information for any hacker to find is completely unsettling.

Apple doesn’t control what apps you install on your phone and what those apps choose to do with your information that you give them.
There are ways to protect yourself to some extent but in this digital age, you can’t. The only way to make an impact is to change the law.

It all depends on data sharing you enable. And I work with these vendors 9th decimal, semcasting, placeiq and ground truth are the big ones. They partner with lots of other apps to get this data and all they do is look for any device that comes into a specific geo fence and then send those to the buying platform as a target segment. Me as the advertiser I never see who is in the segment unless we deliver an ad to them and then I can see the encrypted idfa or gaid (apple and google advertising ids)
