Just purchased a new car that utilizes my iPhone as an onscreen Navigation system when plugged into the car's HDMI port. The system works great (even better then my F150's Sync system) but was wondering about how much data is actually used while on.

I don't use the navigation that often and I don't worry about using data for normal car trips but how about long drives. If I'm on a long drive, lets say 8 hours between SF and LA, does this amount of time use a huge amount of data? I realize there's no reason for the map to be on for the entire time but I was just curious as to how much data is used for Apple maps.

I dont know the amount of data used BUT you can use offline maps that use no data! Check the store for offline maps and pick one you like. Nokia HERE maps work offline and are pretty good.

It doesn't use very much. I took a long trip through the mountains a few weeks ago (about 5 hours each way) and Google Maps had only used about 100MB of data. Apple Maps uses even less data.

Thanks, I was hoping it would only use a small amount of data. On my next trip I'll have to check the data use before and after my drive.

As for getting an off-line map, that sort of defeats the purpose of having a live system with all the options that come with it. With this new Acura iPhone system it offers everything you could ever want from a navigation system. Not to mention saving the cost of having to purchase an Acura with a built in navigation system.
