Ok so I have had my iPhone 3GS since it came out and have been dealing with the backups/data transfer taking a while. BUT i was thinking about it and I have a firewire port on my computer and there are connectors from firewire to my iPhone, so... why would I not just use that to make things a bit faster. I looked around online and found differing views. Has anyone successfully used firewire to sync their iPhone (3G or 3GS, the original i know does not work b/c i tried it with my original iPhone). I don't have a cable and don't want to buy one just to try it out, or perhaps damage my phone.
SO... if anyone knows if you can use firewire to iPhone connector to transfer data, please let me know

Unfortunately it won't work; no member of the iPod family since the 4G has been able to transfer data over FireWire. Apple even removed the ability to CHARGE using FireWire beginning with the Touch and the 4G Nano:

The original iPhone could charge (NOT sync, as you found out) using FireWire, but even this capability was removed in the 3G and later:
